Unlike two other well known abbeys in the area, the Abbaye de Cluny is not a UNESCO site. It was once the largest and most powerful abbey but now only 8% of the church remains. Some of the outbuildings that comprised the abbey also remain.
The grounds surrounding the abbey are interesting and there is a small garden. However, the town itself has little to see and it is somewhat out of the way. I would not making a trip here specifically to see the abbey, notwithstanding its interesting history. read more
