We both had driver's licences but hadn't driven in a few years, so were quite nervous thinking about our first few trips in the brand spanking new hatchback. I got the hang of it pretty quickly, despite one terrifying evening of driving round north Belfast with the interior light on and the headlights off, wondering why the hell people were blaring their horns and shaking their fists at me. After a while, my extremely tentative wife asked me to take her out for a driving lesson. She made me promise not to shout. But, after swinging on to Sandyknowes roundabout at forty miles an hour in front of a bin lorry (which just missed us), one screaming fit (me) and a prolonged bout of crying (her), we decided not to pursue this obviously insane course of action any further, and to book a few driving lessons instead. We found a company in the local listings , and a guy called Manuel took my wife out for a few lessons. I wasn't there, obviously, but by all accounts he was calm, instructive and had the patience of a saint. All the qualities I lack, essentially. I still do the lion's share of the driving as the Sandyknowes incident has psychologically scarred me for life, but my wife has no bother now in jumping into the car for the school runs or whatever. New year, new start. I had my first hour-long lesson in early January and I absolutely loved it. Mark, my instructor, took me into the office and ran through basic safety, equipment and procedure. It was all very professional and I couldn't wait to get on the bike. Luckily Ian's is situated in a very friendly area for learning to ride a bike. There is a dead end street right next to the main building and that is where you spend your first two/three lessons - riding up and down taking instructions through a headset from Mark. It was serious fun and on lesson number four Mark told me I was ready for the open road. I took the bike on a massive run - we were driving about for about an hour and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately that was my last lesson as it started to snow. I'm a bit whimsical in my hobbies and when the snow came I thought I'd be too cold or that I'd fall off so I left it and havent gone back since. Mark was great, he told me he could have me ready for my test and sort all the paperwork out for me at a reasonable price of £370 for the lot. I was happy with this but at £20.00 a lesson I was starting to feel like I should use my money for more important things, like food and electricity. I would highly recommend Ian's for both bike lessons and car lessons. They are a well established and professional business who have been there long enough to see these fad driving instructors come and go. Reasonable prices, good service and friendly staff - I'm getting the itch for the bike again now - yikes!

I've had lots of lessons and am ready to go. Cocky smug lad on the phone said "Nobody would let you have the car without seeing you drive first". I explained that I've had lessons and that they would see me drive before my lesson. "No No! Nobody would let you do that!". One phone call later to the next company and I was all booked in under 3 minutes. Losers. :)
