Unfortunately, it seems the building trade is not one whereby you need any qualifications. Unlike…read morefitting gas where qualifications are required, these cowboy builders can turn up and leave your house in a dangerous condition, with little to prevent them moving on from one botched project to another. The work carried out by Alan and Ben Cooke was deemed so dangerous by a surveyor that the entire building had to be demolished. We're currently pursuing legal action and cannot advise anyone else strongly enough to avoid. They have no idea what they're doing in terms of meeting building regulations, though Alan does a fantastic job of acting consultive and knowledgeable. I think a previous review describing 'their potentially hazardous work is hidden behind plasterboard' sums up their work perfectly. You wouldn't guess that beneath the surface of our project lay major drainage issues, little to no insulation, walls without foundations and roof beams which were installed in a dangerous fashion. If you've already had work carried out by these two, it's probably worth getting it checked over by a professional. I know it's something nobody wants to know about (we certainly dreaded what the report would reveal), but for safety's sake, it's worthwhile for peace of mind. I never write reviews because I understand everyone makes mistakes and people deserve to make a living. However, it's just not fair for them to continue leaving people in a disastrous state. Feel free to contact me if you require further feedback on our experience.

A thief and a liar. 4/11/18 Sunday…read moreI arranged for Micheal Stephenson to plaster the walls of a small bedroom. On the day we agreed a price he requested a £60 to purchase materials for the job. I bank transferred the money to his account the next day with him promising to email a receipt. 7/11/18 Wednesday- He texted me the materials were ordered and he'll send the receipt. I never received the receipt. 12/11/18 Monday- The day before the he was suppose to come and do the job I texted him what time he plans on coming by to start work. He never replied. 13/11/18 Tuesday- I called him at 11am with no answer, at 12.30 he called back saying he hurt his knee at the weekend and could he rearrange to do the job on Friday. I agreed. 16/11/18 Friday- He called in the morning saying he's having bother with suppliers even though a week earlier he told me the materials were ordered. I messaged him later that day asking if he had got it sorted, he responded he had and would be there later that day. He never turned up and neither did any materials that were supposedly ordered to be delivered. 17/11/18 Saturday- I contact him having not heard anything since Friday afternoon and say I need the job done ASAP or could he return my £60. He responds saying he will come first thing Monday morning and do the job. 19/11/18 Monday- He contacts me at 10.20am saying he's just finishing up another job and will be round shortly. He then messages me 6 hours later around 4pm wanting to rearrange for Tuesday. I cancel the job and ask for my money to be returned. He says he'll return it tomorrow. 20/11/18 Tuesday- I contact him at 6.30pm asking when he's bringing my money back. He responds saying he'll bank transfer it first thing on Wednesday. 21/11/18 Wednesday- He texts me at 4pm that he'll bring it round tonight. He doesn't show up. 23/11/18 Friday- He asks for my bank details but again no money appears in my bank. 26/11/18 Monday- I contact him again asking for my money and he responds he'll call me later. He doesn't call me. 28/11/18 Wednesday- I message again asking for my money and he responds he'll get it over either on Thursday 29th or Friday 30th. 30/11/18 Friday- He contacts me and says he's working in my area on Saturday and will drop the money in. He doesn't show. And now is not answering my messages. The whole saga is almost comical. I have dealt with dodgy tradesman in the past but none this silly. The amount of times he contacted me without me chasing him saying he was going to do something only not to do it was just bizarre. To go at these lengths for £60 is just madness since now your online reputation is ruined and if anyone else in the area looks for a plasterer they will pass after seeing this. I will never give a down payment for materials again, thankfully I got another tradesman in that did the job without asking for it so anyone else out there refuse the material payment. Also he has a 5 star review on google but it's from himself a Micheal Stephenson.
