Situated on the second level in Southorn, the Computer Centre is right next to the B2 exit of the Wan Chai MTR. The setup is pretty simple; it is a maze of small shops that range from computer help to mobile repair to video games with an entrance / exit accessible only by escalators. The space is tight, with low ceilings and narrow hallways, which make this place somewhat claustrophobic especially when there are people crowding certain stores. My favorite time to come here is between 10-11am. Most of the shops are open and there is plenty of room to explore without the people rush. I've purchased mousepads, USB adapters, keyboards, camera memory, and basic electronics. Most of the things I've sought out can be purchased at any discount / flea market, but quality is a concern this is a good place to start. Every store has its own unique inventory, it never hurts to bargain and shop around. Always bring a smart phone with a picture of the desired item. It saves a lot of dialogue and keeps the shopping experience ideal. The prices aren't going to be as cheap as Kowloon, but it does the trick on short notice.

We were on the top floor, as noted as the "professional floor" and being helped by AA I.T. Sytem Limited for our laptop repair. There are many vendors and many businesses, this is simply the one we selected. Purchase or repair...this was a good place to go. We would go back.

Cards and a good selection of English language magazines are also on offer as are funky notebooks.

Well I'm glad that I did my research prior to visiting the store because of course the eager sales associate tried to up-sell me on a larger-than-necessary TV. Look, my apartment measures 460 square feet so I knew that a 40-inch TV would be more than fine. When I asked him if they carried something in my price range, he said 'no'... and then I inquired about the off-brand model I had seen online. Ahhh, that! Something like a miracle, as all of a sudden he knew the what and where on the TV in question. I then perused the dehumidifier section, and a different sales associate tended to me there. I'm guessing there's different sales jurisdictions based on the product training the associates receive? About 10 minutes later, sales associate #1 was ringing me up and arranging the free delivery for the TV. Pro tips: + Do your research online, as the store is quite small and a good portion of the inventory resides in a New Territories warehouse. Know exactly what you want before arriving! + Pay for the installation if they offer it. I didn't and what should have been an easy assembly - connecting the TV to the stand - wasn't. The manual directions and diagrams were terribly unclear - and 4 of the 8 screws were missing. Pricing at Fortress isn't the most competitive, but I guess you're paying for the convenience of one-stop shopping.

There used to be a shop on Shelly Street, and while it is virtually monopoly at Soho, it still shut down and replaced by a property agency shop. So yeah that tells you how hard the small businesses to survive here. It's not your average "phone cases", USB cables, battery chargers, etc low-end low-tech shops. It sells serious stuff just like what you'd get from Wan Chai Computer Centre. I was here a couple of times asking for some very specific items - And they always have them. The staff are not super geeky, but they know their stuff, or are at least helpful enough to check for you. I have yet bought any major items here (computers, monitors, etc) but they do have guarantee of 7 days return policy with the original package. I do feel like they are marginally pricier than Wan Chai, but it does justify my trip to Wan Chai just to buy something. So I'll stick with here as my go-to shop for day to day computer accessories.

I guess back to good old Georges camera in Sydney to give my money to them. The thing that really gets me is how quickly a sales person sums up a customer even before he has the chance to see the colour of the credit card.

In fact, if stock can't be found in Wing Shing (which rarely happens unless it is a hot and new item), staff will run up to Man Shing to get it for you. The Fa Yuen Street branch is their flagship store and the other branches are located in the "vegetable" streets, Choi and Sai Yeung Choi Street. What I like about Wing Shing are their honest prices and decent stock of less-than-mainstream photographic equipment such as Rolleiflex, Gitzo and Phottix. The prices here are competitively better than the shops in Hong Kong Island. Often what you find here you will not find in mainstream electronic shops such as Fortress and Broadway. A big plus is you don't have to squeeze in with those who want to buy cell phones (a la Fortress/Broadway) - although there is a mobile phone section - and just focus on getting your photography game on. The staff aren't pushy but are sometimes rude - it pays to research ahead and know what you want so you can inspect and buy the item in 10 minutes flat. Always, always discuss the warranty before purchasing. Normally what I do is check the average price of the item on the Internet by looking at the official press release then comparing it with the New York giant photographic store B&H. Once I know the official price(s), I convert it to HKD to see if the pricing is fair and if I should move forward with my purchase in Wing Shing. Credit cards are charged with interest so make sure you pay in cash (and also ask for a discount if possible).

There was a good range of Sony Cameras and accessories as well as other products. Darren the sales person was able to show me a Sony E lens for 10% less than the lowest quote I have been offered so far. Carmen the resident photographic expert gave me lots of helpful hints. It was easy to see that Carmen was passionate about photography. They all spoke good English. I was most happy to purchase the lens from these guys. It tested well on my camera and did what it was supposed to. Obviously I was a little apprehensive about the warranty etc. But for the price, I took a punt. I have since been able to register the lens with the Australian Sony website and the serial number posed not problems, for what it is worth. Overall it was a very pleasant experience without having to haggle. Alan's contribution was a nod to agree on the price and an advice to me NOT buy the Nikon Lens to Sony E mount adapter yet as there was problems. I wish these guys well and hope they continue to look after their customers.

However, their initial charge was 500 HKD ($63.70 USD). Salesman reduced it to 450 HKD ($57.30 USD) when I paid cash. Same filter is $32.50 from B&H and from Adorama. I pointed this out. Salesman had no comment. Guess they have to charge a significant markup to help with the rent. I won't deal with them again.

Heng Fung is the best place to buy photographic filters and most accessories (e.g. lens caps,…read morefilter holders, blowers) anywhere in Hong Kong. They have the best prices, always have stock and have a fantastic return policy, which can't be said for a lot of stand-alone photographic businesses. The shop might be off-path for those who live on the Island but it's just a couple of MTR stations away, specifically Exit C1 of Sham Shui Po Station. From there, take a left, stay on the right side/pavement, and walk for about two blocks, until you see the name "Heng Fung Photo Supplies" or the shop number 151. The shop is a typical photography joint, usually manned by two persons. I have to commend the staff as they're both knowledgeable and helpful. I once inquired about a filter size and one of the staff showed me the actual filter instead of just talking about it. You can ask them for advice on what accessory would be suitable for your cameras. I have bought a lens adapter from them (to use with my old film lenses) plus a couple of step-up rings for my 77mm ND and CPL filters. It was 50 dollars cheaper (the lens adapter) than if I were to buy it in Mong Kok. After going home, I noticed that I couldn't fit in one of the step-up rings to my lens. I realized that I bought the reverse size! The next day, I brought it back and they replaced it within three minutes, no questions asked. It was reminiscent of the service quality in the US, where you can buy an item in a West Coast Walmart and get it replaced even when you're in an East Coast Walmart. If you're just getting started on landscape photography (or on a student-like budget), I recommend getting the "Tian Ya" square filters from them. Yes, they're generic but good enough to achieve most shots. If you want to buy cleaning equipment for your camera and lenses, they carry branded Lenspen and Giottos for different needs.

It sells all of the standard computer wares that one might expect; hard drives, memory cards, printers, networking accessories, you get the idea, but also a number of other electronic items like shredders, card media accessories, and television accessories. What is refreshing, is to see a very well stocked computer store outside of the Wan Chai Computer Centre (but it does have sister branches in Wan Chai 298 and Mong Kok). What is also nice about this store is that they have quite a large chunk of real estate with all of their products displayed on shelves around the shop. As such, you don't feel like you're walking into a junk store. If you do have a chance to go, ask for Chris, he's very knowledgeable and will steer you in the right direction. It is useful if you do know something about computers, or what you want to buy, because they will try to up-sell you on some products. For example, I wanted to buy a hard drive for my Mac, and they presented me the Mac formatted one, which was HK$50 more expensive. It wasn't until I explain to them that I could reformat my own PC drive and save myself $50, that they conceded to give me what I wanted. The prices are very reasonable, comparable to the other computer centres around Hong Kong, despite being in Central. Don't forget to also ask for a discount. As with most stores in Hong Kong, the list price is not the real price. Ask for a discount you may get 5 to 10% off.
