John Hancock Charter School - During a school carnival

John Hancock Charter School

I can't say enough good things about this school! They have the best teachers and staff and I have…read morenoticed the quality of learning the children receive while enrolled in this school. We were greatly blessed moving into a neighborhood close to this school and by the grace of God our children got in at the right time. Before each school year starts, each teacher reaches out to the parents and makes house calls - a visit to the child's home to meet the parents in person, give them the curriculum, expectations, and guidelines the children are supposed to have so the parents and children know the teacher's expectation throughout the school year. The teachers also give parents their contact info so the parents can easily connect with the teacher at anytime. I mean, what school can you say, that teachers come to your house and makes a personal visit to connect with the family directly? I do not know of any except this school. In addition, this school only has one class per grade - one class of kinder, one class of first grade, etc. The ratio of teacher to children is around 20 to 1. They keep the size of class small so they can keep the class intimate. They also have a therapist on staff for students' mental and emotional health! They keep the students actively reading all year long by having "battle of the books" per grade and have awesome incentives. Julie, the principal, is a "go-getter" and treats all of her students like they are her own. You can feel the love of JHCS staff for each student, and each student is known by their name. It truly is a second family. Besides all of the great things I already mentioned, JHCS is ranked #1 Best Public Elementary Schools in the area and has a grade of "A" in overall niche grade!

If I could give zero stars, I would…read more My son started attending this location in 2024. On his second day, I received a message from his teacher stating that he was disrupting nap time, being noisy, and causing other issues. I understood that adjusting to a new environment can be difficult for young children, so I took their concerns seriously and worked with my son to reinforce quiet time. However, I continued receiving messages from his teacher daily, and it reached the point where I was anxiously anticipating another complaint. One day, I noticed his nap blanket was covered in leaves, as if he had been outside. When I asked him, he told me that he did his "quiet time" outside. When we inquired about this, the school denied it. Later, I was called into a meeting with the behavioral technician, Jessica Triptow. At the time, I had no idea about her legal troubles (you can google it) but in hindsight, knowing she was involved in my child's education is deeply unsettling. During the meeting, we were advised to enroll our son full-time to help him adjust to the routine. He was later moved to another class with a more patient teacher. During another meeting, I had the opportunity to review the classroom cameras and witnessed a disturbing incident where a teacher forcefully picked up a child who refused to go inside after playtime and dropped him roughly. Thankfully, the child was not an infant, but it was still highly concerning. Eventually, the school suggested that my son be evaluated for possible autism this recommendation was made by Jessica Triptow (which by the way, made it to the news for very disturbing reasons, you can google it) Shortly after, we were informed that he could not return unless we provided a classroom "shadow" at our own expense, so basically paying another person to do their job . This entire experience was frustrating, stressful, and deeply disappointing. In retrospect, I am relieved that we decided to remove our child from this location. I have since spoken to other parents who shared similar concerns about this center. While I hope other locations uphold higher standards, I cannot in good conscience recommend this one. I initially had high expectations, but unfortunately, our experience was nothing like what we had hoped for. Another shady thing is that they hide their google reviews, I guess I should've seen those red flags.

The campus is beautiful and thoughtfully designed. From the secure fingerprint entry to being greeted by an administrative team that knows every child by name, it's clear they truly care. Each day I feel confident leaving my child in such a peaceful, welcoming environment. I recommend Dancing Moose to anyone who will listen.
