The Picker Knows - Interesting display in booth

Every now and then you comes across a place on Yelp that makes you step back a little... I've been…read morehere a TON of times! How have I not reviewed this place before now...?! The Picker Knows is one of those places... Probably the premier, and my favorite, antique "mall" in the Des Moines metro! Rows and rows of vendor booth and cases. I'd hate to total the money up that I've spent here... And buying is great, but a lot of times I just have fun window shopping. Looking at the many different things here that I can't afford or have no business spending money on... Lol Very large display items, furniture, antiques, retro and vintage, some modern, a few clothes, comics, vinyls, Hot Wheels, some dusty and rusty things, handcrafted items, and tons of smalls! Prices are vendor driven. So some are high, some are at market, and there are great deals to be found here too. As a veteran I appreciate the veteran's only parking spot near the front door. At only 55 I pass it up a lot because there are veterans in A LOT worse shape than I am. But I have used it a couple of times. It's so easy to spend hours here! Vendors leave and new vendors fill their slots. And with the merchandise being vendor provided...the selection is ever changing! The staff is fantastic and always available for questions or to open a case! The bathrooms aren't terrible for this environment. They aren't perfect...pretty plain Jane...but they don't send you running for the hills. Lol The Picker Knows is a must stop in the Des Moines metro if you are into antiquing or thrifting!

I was here because my Nephew was getting married next door at the Decades Event Center. I believe that both spaces were once a Dahl's Grocery Store. Since I was early and the pictures I was in were taken, I had some time to wander about. I love looking around antique stores and this place certainly had a lot of space and individual "consignment" booths. In situations like this, my eyes glaze over as I keep walking. In my head is Gayle saying - "Where are you going to put this crap?". In my heart is the preference of finding some unique peace that I can convince myself that I can't do without. I finally purchased a cool heavy metal Iowa-themed belt buckle for $15. That was after my go-to shopping targets of knives, pens, and old publications came up empty. I also find that I'm good for about 30 minutes in an antique store, and them I have to get out. If there's a next time, I'm sure inventory will be different, so who knows what might appear!

Daugherty Auction & Real Estate Services

Daugherty Auction was hired by us to auction off my wife's grandfather's estate. I wish we would…read morehave checked references before we hired them, because they definitely lack professional behavior, especially after the sale. We had given the key to Daugherty so the broker could escort potential buyers through the real estate, but found out they were giving keys to interested parties and allowing them to walk through the house, unattended, with all of my wife's grandfathers personal property in it. They were asked not to do this when they were given the key. We feel very strongly that they totally rushed the last half of the auction because they were concerned about time, which really has an impact on per item peices. They did not auction all the items listed on the advertisement and said they forgot. They told us they were going to bring auction goers to the basement to auction off items downthere, that they didn't want to carry out before the auction, and never did, but then stated "they forgot". Because of this, we still have several items in the basement that could have been sold, but now we have to try to sell or dispose of ourselves. They sold items out of order so we feel that we did not get as good of a price out of them as we could have. For example, they sold the boat motors before the boat, but the person that bought the boat might have given a better price for a motor. We had a player piano with several boxes of scrolls for it. Chad (auctioneer's son) bought the scrolls himself and did not even try to sell the advertised player piano, so we would have had a player piano without any scrolls to play on it. Should have sold the piano first and then the scrolls or at least sold them together. When my wife asked why they sold the scrolls, but never attempted to sell the piano, he was extremely rude to her and basically the a temper tantrum and threw the scrolls on the ground and told his workers to take them off his bill. If course, this upset my wife and nearly brought her to tears! They sold the working Victrolla, but didn't try to sell any of the many Victrolla records that went with it! When we approached them to talk to them, they just turned their back on us and tried to ignore us. When we told him that we were trying to talk to him he said he was done and was getting the f*** out of here and going home, like a little kid! We continued to try to talk to Kelly (auctioneer, Chad's dad) and he asked why are were acting this way, since we had a nice auction. Like father like son, I guess, because he then turned his back on us and tried ignoring the situation, when were trying to work things out. We ttold them that they needed to apologize to my wife, which Chad did a little late, but then told them, "If you have any questions, call my secretary." Overall not a good experience at all! Based on my experience and observations that day, I definitely do not recommend their services at all! To be rude and disrespectful to the very people that hired you is kind of like drilling a hole in your own boat in the middle of the lake!
