As a Toni and Guy Academy, you might think this place won't give 5-star service, but it really does (I was a regular here for 3 years until my hairdresser, who had started out as a junior, moved up through the ranks to a senior stylist). My first ever haircut here was as a 'hair model' - a.k.a. for freeee - and I've never looked back. Students - you also get 40% your first cut with a snapfax... waaaay!

My recent £38 crappy haircut in London (a self-esteem crippling pixie/shag/mullet hybrid) has been growing out for a couple months now, and I figured that while I was in Glasgow I might as well splash out on a crappy haircut, as it certainly would be less costly than its counterparts in England's capital have been. And I stepped into Essensuals. Sure, there are Essensuals in London, but I was feeling good about this little salon on St Vincent, around the corner from Glasgow Central Station - I mean, how could I go wrong by picking the closest salon to the station where my Glasgow-bound train from London dropped me off . . . ? I admit, this was a hasty choice, and I was fully prepared for the worst. But what I got was the best. I sat down, and my stylist and I pulled the pins that were previously hiding my haircut shame out of my hair, and she started running her hands through my hair (I swear with a baffled look on her face, unless I was imagining it). "What would you like done today?" "I got this awful haircut a while back, and I hate it." "What do you hate about it?" "Mostly the fact that it looks like a mullet." And so after some more discussion, we came to the conclusion that we'd bob it. I was fine with this, although still not expecting much. But the stylist took her time as she snipped through my hair, many times over. She commented on the sheer thickness of my hair, yet she never took out a pair of thinning sheers (this is my litmus test of good stylists). The end result was fabulous. She asked if I wanted anything changed at the end, and I made a non-committal statement about my fringe looking a bit too perfect; she chopped into it to make it a bit more funky and undone. Ultimately, I'm no longer embarrassed of my hair, and, for a Londoner at least, £40 for the amount of time I got in the cutting chair was a bargain. Unfortunately since I can't afford the £120 train tickets every month or so, the hunt for a salon in London continues.

I don't get my hair cut here but if gets a really good name and my aunt gets her new do in her regularly. One of my friends has been going here since she was about 9 and always goes here to get her hair styled for a party or special ocassion and her hair always looks amazing. The prices range depending on who is cutting your barnet. For a stylist it's £30, senior stylist £40 and by the creative director it's £50. They also do hair conditioning and replenishing treatments that start from a whopping £100. A very modern salon, very organised and not a hair out of place. Literally.

This is surprising because there seems to be as many salons dotted about the city as there are pubs. Either you need to remortgage your house for meh results, your hair gets butchered, or the stylist bullies you into dyeing your already black hair black. Fortunately, I'm not one of those girls who cries when it comes to their hair, and my hair grows like. a. weed. After the bullying incident at another Merchant City salon, I thought I'd wait until I was back in NYC to get my hair done. Except my hair became annoyingly long, and that's where Chloe at Alan Edwards came to the rescue. Cute and quirky, she was exactly the opposite of the stylist during my last salon experience (*cough* Chesne). She actually listened to what I wanted, did not roll her eyes when I showed her a picture of the shape (a long bob), nor did she try and bully me into dying my hair or try to sell me products that I didn't need (though I did end up buying the Kérastase volume spray because it smells DIVINE!). My haircut was actually part of an itison deal, but after my experience and subsequent visits (I have since gone much shorter with trust), I would not hesitate to pay full price for the quality of service received. I think Alan Edwards Merchant City and Chloe might be a keeper... just might!

Hence, I cannot say much about their colouring standards or indeed drastic haircuts. Although, from my limited experience it was a really nice little place. The girls were very pleasant, quick and I managed to be in and out in well under an hour, even though I had not arranged an appointment earlier. Just what I want on my day off so I can squeeze as much in as possible. Meanwhile, the shop was clean, tidy and perfectly nice; while the prices were reasonable and in line with other hairdressers close by.

I love getting my hair cut at this little gem because the staff aren't just excellent hair dressers but also really nice, warm people. Whilst I have lived out of Glasgow the last ten years I've been back often enough to still have had a good 15 cuts at 10 design. Usually either by Tim or Paul. Both of whom are excellent, they really know hair, but also don't overbear with that experience, taking time to talk things through with clients, making absolutely sure you're happy with the end result. I've always been happy with the end result. So. If you're either new to the West End, or just looking for a kapper who'll listen to you, why not try 10 design.

The other staff are very friendly and helpful and I've always had a good haircut here. They are also really good with children and do childrens' cuts for a fraction of the price elsewhere. I always feel welcomed into the salon and always get a cup of tea and biscuit or a glass of wine over the festive season. Prices are maybe a little on the high side considering this is a local little salon but I don't mind paying them as the staff are so nice.

It is usually David who cuts my hair and he is always ready to chat even though he may have done the same convo 10 times already that day. Listens to my vague instructions in what to do and manages to turn it into what I was looking to have done. Price wise it is 11 quid for me which seems reasonable in terms of pricing you would get elsewhere. No hesitation from me in recommending this place to get your hair cut.

So, twice, I have been to Et Vous - and both times it was the male that served me. On both occasions I had a hairstyle which I stressed I wanted to retain and just trim the hair slightly as it was getting far too long to stick up anymore. On both occasions, he's thinned my hair down to that of a thread, making me look almost bald and the hairstyle I had was no longer visible. Definitely sticking to the Wee Barber Shop from now on, would rather wait out a couple of weeks than waste £11 on an abysmal haircut. Paul

Manageress Zoe runs an informal, fun and open environment where you can relax, feel at home and totally de-stress. That said, she never compromises on standards or professionalism and neither I nor my daughter have ever left the salon unhappy with our hair. Top marks to Enigma - I highly recommend!
