Review Visit: July 12th, 2015…read more A&Wwwwwww yeah! First off, I want to let it be known that there are A&Ws in the United States but I have never seen one as an independent locale. Plus, we were hungry and needing a quick bite after Tim Hortons. Thinking this was going to be your standard fare fast food place, I didn't go in with wild expectations. We headed in and started to look over the menu. The food offering was about what I expected from a place like this. Burgers, wraps, french fries and other typical fast food... food. BUT!!! Have no fear! They have poutine here! Yes, they do serve the National Food here. No worries there. Did I get it? No, I didn't want my first ever tasting of poutine from a fast food place. I did have poutine later in this trip but that is a story for another day. We eventually ordered, took our seats and waited for our food to be made. It only took them a few minutes to have our food ready to go and the cashier brought it out to our table. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich and was not ready for what I got. I was expecting just a chicken sandwich with spices in the breading. What I got was a chicken that was served on a ciabatta bun(?) with a slathering of spicy sauce on top of some lettuce. Being surprised by the actual sandwich, I was excited to see how it tasted. Let me tell you. This was the best chicken sandwich I've ever had from a fast food place. The flavor, maybe due to it being a spicy, was WOW! It had a nice slight burn to it without needing the fire department on standby. The chicken was juicy and complimented all the toppings/bun. Each bite was pure bliss... and followed by a sip of water to cool down the slight burn. I have a conspiracy that the food sold and served in Canada has stricter food regulations they have to follow than they do in the States. The food at this A&W and the rest of the food I had in Canada had this... jump in quality and flavor. It's hard to explain unless you try the food yourself. Even my cousin agreed that the food had a better quality and flavor to it than the food back home. Any who, that spicy chicken sandwich was incredibly delicious and only slightly singed my taste buds. I want to visit another A&W but I don't know if the ones in the States will have the same quality as their Canadian counterpart.

After the Bombers game that I had attended in early July, I felt like a bite to eat. I decided to…read moreplace an order at this McDonald's. It's on Pembina Highway. It's the closest one to the University of Manitoba and Princess Auto Stadium that's open 24 hours. You know what's funny? I didn't know that this McDonald's existed. I never dropped by here when I was a student at the U of M. I never came here when I was in the area as a Winnipegger. I would hit Earls or Perkins for a bite to eat instead. Sadly, both restaurants are gone. It was pretty busy on a late Friday night. I got here just before midnight. I ordered the mighty McMuffin meal. I got small fries and a snack-sized orange cream pop shake. I hit the drive-thru. It had steady volume. There were folks going inside the restaurant at this hour. It's popular among students and hungry post-Bombers game folks alike. I got to the drive-thru and heard a male voice on the other end. I rattled off my order code. He said to come over to the window. I had to wait off to the side of the restaurant for my mighty McMuffin to be made. What made me uneasy were drivers whipping around the bend faster than they should be. I also didn't like drivers who were pulling in front and behind me rather closely. They left little space for me to get out after a male staffer came out to hand me my food. It's not my favourite McDonald's. I would sooner drive further south to the one by the Four Points hotel that has a safer, casual vibe. I was hungry and parked away from this restaurant to chow down. It was nice to park away from the craziness. I loved my mighty McMuffin. It's an awesome breakfast sandwich at any time of the day. Why choose between bacon and sausage when you can have it all? It was yummy and satisfied my cravings. My small fries were interesting. A few of them were limp. The rest were crispy. I probably got two batches of fries mixed together. I'm glad that I got a small. It hit the spot. I loved my orange cream pop shake. It's a creamsicle in shake form. The snack-sized version was perfect for my midnight snack. Other than the weirdness with drivers who have the need for speed here and don't like leaving a ton of space when they parallel park, I was happy with my food. Maybe it's a better in the daytime. I drove between Steinbach and Winnipeg almost every day, and loved it. I'm a road trip person and it was enjoyable when traffic moves. This Sal's is located on St. Anne's Road at Fermor Avenue, which is the Trans-Canada Highway. It was easy to pull off the highway and drop by this eatery for lunch before I caught my flight back to Toronto (technically, Mississauga). This Sal's is located in a plaza with a Shell gas station, Dollarama, and FreshCo. I ended up parking behind the Sal's and walking in. I liked that there was a shallow ramp up to the doors for accessibility. The entrance door is on the left, You exit on the left. This Sal's is the most well-oiled machine that I've ever been to. A man seated everyone. Another woman made sure that each table and booth was clean. Servers worked like clockwork. Wow! Kristen, who would end up being my server, indicated that my booth was just wiped down. Both seats were wet. I asked if I could get some paper towel to wipe one of the seats down. She got me some. I dried my side of the booth and then sat down. Looking back, should a customer actually do this work? I frankly didn't mind helping out because I just wanted to sit down without the seat being damp. I don't know if she simply was tired and was more concerned warning me. I basically offered to dry off one side. Anyway, I love dropping by Sal's. I can rely on consistent, yummy food. It's a Winnipeg staple. This location is open 24 hours a day. I have my usual meal that I get at any Sal's: - Diet Pepsi - Bacon mushroom swiss nip platter, with fries and coleslaw, and pickles I got gravy for my fries. It was extra. It's worth getting gravy for your fries. It didn't take long for my meal to get to me. The wait allowed me to upload photos to Yelp. My Diet Pepsi hit the spot on a hot summery day. It was cold, fizzy, and refreshing. I got a refill midway eating my meal. The bacon mushroom swiss nip was excellent. A nip is a burger. The patty was delicious with the bacon, melted swiss cheese, and sliced mushrooms. It has everything that I love about a burger. The bun was soft and yummy. The platter came with a few sliced pickles and coleslaw. I loved the crunch and contrast that both of them added to my meal. It came with fries. I got a lot of them. The rich beef gravy was delightful with the fries. So good! I couldn't fit dessert in. I got the bill and settled it at the table. I used my credit card to tip and tap the payment machine. Done! I used the washroom before I ran a couple of final errands around Winnipeg before my flight. The stall that I used in the women's washroom was clean. No complaints. It was nice checking out this Sal's. I have passed by it for eons. I'm glad that I can finally say that I've been here. The food was great. Staff were nice, competent, and efficient. (291)
