Mediocre at best. I be been training for 10 years, with the last 4 yrs training 3 days a week…read more(classes, 1 on 1 , and sparring ) and was in two for a day so i thought i would take there level 3 class. Definitely a great place for a beginner who is looking to shed some lbs and is bored of the traditional gym, but definitely not a fight gym. Or if it is a fight gym they need to re evaluate their levels for classes. Very little technique but more about warm up, and cheesey burn out at the end. If the 90 min class maybe 30 min was actual pad work and it was beginner stuff. 3 punch combo with push kick. Would have got a better work out on a heavy bag at a local YMCA.

I was here on Tuesday (Uptown location) for the 6:00 pm class…read more Pros: - Good place for starting off. -There are 3 locations, uptown being the largest. - Punching bags are off to the far side away from where classes take place which is nice. - Change room is clean and there were enough lockers for everyone. - Lot's of room. - At the Downtown location, I was immediately welcomed at the door. - The pace is good for those who are just starting to work out. Cons: - You really do need to buy gloves, even if it's a trial class because the equipment (spare gloves) smells really awful. And no, it's not the smell of sweat, it's a scent that's rather indescribable. - The claim for TKMT is that no one is judgemental however the instructor said I looked horrible. I don't think she meant it to be offensive, but I was embarrassed since the whole Level 1 class turned their heads to look at me. I think the word was just a negative connotation is all. I suggest you bring a friend for the first trial for a comfortable experience.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this place. It felt quite run-down and in need of upkeep. There…read morewas dog hair everywhere, which made the space feel unclean. On top of that, the coaches weren't even on beat during the class--it really threw off the flow and made the session hard to follow. Overall, not a great experience.

I've had my Hers Kickboxing membership for around 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it. Once I…read morecompleted the orientation, I tried out HIIT Boxing, Taboxing and Power Box. Every class requires boxing gloves; you can either bring your own or purchase/rent them from Her's. Gloves go for $32/pair and rentals are $2 per class. Each person has a punching target (Bob) used to punch and kick during the class. The instructors are very motivating and encourage the class really well when we go through the moves. They are also aware of that everyone is coming into this class is at a different level and accommodate with modifications for the moves. There is a lot of importance given to form, footwork and using the right body parts to increase power in your punches and kicks (to prevent injuries). Each workout class is 45 mins and during that time, the instructors take you through a warm up, full workout including cardio and strength training as well as a cool down. The cardio and strength components vary depending on which workout you choose. The website describes each workout really well and also tells you what level of cardio and strength is in them so you're prepared before you start. There is a mix of cardio (jumping jacks, burpees) as well as strength training moves using weights in each workout. One part of Her's that I really enjoy is the online booking system. Their calendar view of classes is really easy to navigate through and allows you to book classes up to 1 week in advance. I'd definitely recommend Hers if you're looking for a fun switch to your regular workouts!

Innercity MMA - Smiles for miles

Chinatown, Downtown Core

The Space: Walking into Innercity MMA feels like getting…read moreinto a very special place: amazing fighting paintings from famous Toronto painters, interesting colours, and the amazing smiles of everybody in the dojo. Teaching level and atmosphere: If like me, you have been subjected to weird or crazy coaches (I have been training martial arts for 13 years), Professor Shah Franco is a total breath of fresh air: you can tell he knows his stuff inside out and yet, he does not take himself too seriously. In the last year, since I've joined, I got to learn and practice a variety of styles (different kinds of stand up, ground work, BJJ, wrestling, self-defence) while having a ton of fun. Training is intense, but the atmosphere is jovial and everyone works hard without any ego flaring. There is a wide range of people training there from professionals to recreational but levels remains fairly high. Instructor attention to class: I have been injured many times in the past because other people could not understand the principle of sparring, and would go full out. No such thing happens here because Prof. Shah monitors sparring sessions (and every class) at all times, and he even spars and rolls with us most of the time (which is pretty amazing, considering how coaches are usually too broken to do so). In one word, Innercity is a gem. If you want to train the real stuff, while having fun, it is the place for you.

InnerCity MMA is a fantastic place to learn and train in a variety of martial arts all at once but,…read moremore than that, it's an amazing place to grow - both as an athlete and as a person. Professor Shah Franco is an incredibly knowledgeable martial artist and he's simply one of the most patient, impassioned coaches I've ever had the pleasure to train under. He brings joy to his life's work and can effortlessly put a smile on our faces, regardless of how much sweat is happily pouring off of everyone (natural side note: the facility itself is kept super clean and is beautifully designed!). The gym has a great atmosphere to train in and all the students are wonderful at giving back. I learn a lot just by working through drills and techniques with my training partners, who double as role models and friends. They always take the time to slow things down and make helpful suggestions, which makes the culture at the gym one of giving...even when "giving" becomes "giving you the fight of your life", it's a ton of fun. With long hours at work, I always look forward to training to switch gears. The fact that the schedule is flexible allows me to do a quick weight workout myself when I can't stay for the next martial arts class. Overall, InnerCity MMA is a home away from home where I can stay fit with friends. My only complaint is that I can't fix the rest of my life to get more time at the gym! Knowledge. Fun. Challenges. This place is hard to beat.

Hook Up Muay Thai Boxing literally changed my life. After years on the road with a rock band,…read moreeating bar food and drinking, and living an extremely unhealthy lifestyle in many ways, I reached a point where I realized that I could either continue to get less healthy, or do something positive and improve myself. So I joined a major gym chain. Although I liked the gym, after a year, I was not achieving the results I wanted. I had met one of the instructors at Hook Up through a casual fitness kickboxing class, and he invited me to try a class at Hook Up. From the moment I walked in I was hooked. Hook Up oozes credibility. It's hidden (like some back-alley boxing club straight out of the Rocky franchise) behind a tile shop in that industrial section of the city north of Orfus road. As I stepped through the door, I was struck by creak of the bags swinging on the chain, the sound of gloves hitting pads, and the whipping of jump ropes. It was a Sunday afternoon, and the place was busy with people of all walks of life, from couples with pre-toddlers in tow, training recreationally, to competitive athletes getting ready for provincial, national, and international competition. Far from being intimidating, I found the owner/head trainer Jim (National Co-ordinator of CASK: Thai Boxing) and his wife Theodora (a national champion) to be welcoming, and they immediately set me at ease. I quickly got to know everyone there, and I was hooked! The instructors are world class, there are several national champions training there, and the club takes a whole-life approach to health and fitness. After a nutritional consult with Jim, I completely revamped my diet and began a new phase in my life. Hook Up Muay Thai Boxing is a member of the Canadian Amateur Sport Kickboxing, the governing body for the sport in Canada. That brings with it a lot of bonuses not available to members of not accredited clubs (notably access to insurance while training or sparring). It also means that if you want and are able, you can train and compete at CASK sanctioned events and even try to make the National Team! I have been a member of Hook Up now for a year and a half, and in that time, I've reached fitness and health goals I never dreamed possible for myself. I'm 34 lbs lighter than I was when I got married 3 years ago, and my energy level has never been higher. I can run farther than I ever thought I'd be able to, and I'm more confident than I've ever been. In fact, in less than two weeks I'll be fighting in my first K1 rules kickboxing tournament. And that is a LONG way from where I was as a travelling musician, believe me......

Great place. Expert staff…read more Doesn't get any better.
