Since I virtually never venture around the FM dial (oh, what a sad, sad audio scene we suffer in ABQ), I was more than a little curious about the station and I started listening. I immediately noted the following, which remain true one year later: 1) The song selection is determined by a corporate behemoth called American Public Media, they have no DJs, the music is simply pumped onto our airwaves via a local hub. On the massive negative side, it means listeners have absolutely no way to connect with and influence the content, and forget about requests. The ugly reality of modern radio. 2) On the plus side, it means absolutely no talk and very few commercials, compared to most stations. Virtually every time I tune in I'm getting music or a lame-o promo that says something like "Area 102.9, it's like if Yoda used the Force to Rock", whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. 3) Whoever chooses this music has awful taste in "modern" rock, they play the same crap that you'll find on other stations, alt-folk and electro-anthem-y stuff that drives me fucking insane (which I must suffer or face the wrath of my 16 year-old). They also have a weird fascination with the The Cure, The Police, the Red Hot Chili Peppers (a lame selection, where Kiedis raps about stupid shit), R.E.M., U2 and a smattering of 1980's Brit Pop. A third of the time, listenable. I'd say, overall, a two-to-three star station. And, unfortunately, one of the best in town.

Spend an hour with them during the week and you'll find that they craft a lively, entertaining and often personal Days Of Our Burque Lives program each and every day. It's an impressive feat, something that most shows really fail to deliver because hey, it's hard. But the team is really stellar. Concerning the music, this station really needs to connect with a huge demographic, so you're getting a mix of mostly feel-good pop and rock, with a lil' sompin' sompin' thrown in to throw you off every now and then. I'm probably interested in about a quarter of it, but that figures. I'm a music snob and I'm not a big fan of mainstream stuff, so winning me over is really futile. For you 80's enthusiasts, they mix tape a pretty decent selection at the noon hour. Go check 'em out, you might find your new breakfast buddies.

If you're a fan of the egomaniacal Jim Rome, you'll notice that the station boasts a fun fact: 610 was one of the first stations, nation-wide, to carry him (IMHO, not something to brag about). Dan Patrick and his band of gigglers take the early afternoon slot, and your drive home from the office features The Sports Bar, a somewhat amusing topical local show that's gotten negligibly better over the years. Like many rather one-dimensional stations, The Sports Animal throws birthday celebrations at places like Hooters and they don't seem terribly concerned about occasional gender-specific commentary, that's as specific as I'll put it. With one exception. The morning show, Opening Drive with Jeff and JJ, it's very good. Jeff Siembieda has always been an easy-going, enjoyable pro, and it's been fun listening to JJ Buck sharpen his game over the years (JJ used to speak too quickly and scramble his vowels). They're a reasonable voice for New Mexico sports critique, I'm glad they're still on the dial.

From what I understand, uPublic supports a wealth of cinema and local telecasts, The Morning Brew being the biggie, with local personality Larry Ahrens at the helm (and his contemporary, Erin Muffoletto, rocking the locally-known). The studio itself is pretty simplistic: one side typically features a tall table, the other a couch where Larry (grand as a skyscraper) looms over the guests and somehow makes them feel at home.
