78 Derngate is the only building outside Scotand to have been designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, having been in private ownership for many years, it passed to a trust and after a huge amount of fundraising it has opened as a beautifully restored museum, the period detail and level of attention is breathtaking. The adjoining house has now been opened as a gift shop/cafe and museum celebrating William Basset Lowke the toy train maker who owned the house orginally and commissioned Mackintosh to do the work.
