Truly a Convenience store!…read more I think we take 7-Eleven Stores for granted in the USA. In other countries such as Thailand and Hong Kong, they're more than what we think! Even in Hawaii, 7-Eleven serves up musubi - a local favorite. This particular 7-Eleven had a Hello Kitty hand sanitizer. I HAD TO get it because it was the last one on the shelf...sorry, My Melody! I also got a cute Hello Kitty surprise toy! Hee hee! Foodwise, my friend was excited about "cherng funn" which is a Hong Kong comfort food consisting of wide, flat, rolled noodles, topped with sesame and soy sauce. I passed on the hot sauce and agreed to the sesame seeds. We also got Hong Kong milk tea - I had to add 2 packets of sugar because it was potent to me! The strongly brewed tea contains a lot of caffeine! I also appreciate 7-Eleven for being open everytime I pass by. The convenience of loading more money (Hong Kong dollars) onto my Octopus Card (Hong Kong debit card) makes life so much better!

It's the one right across from the N5 MTR exit and next to Japan Home. Small store but with enough of a variety of drinks and snacks that it qualifies as a convenience store. I usually get a Vitasoy, Kowloon Dairy, Yakult, Schweppes, etc. Besides the Jenny idiots trying to kill time or get fuel while standing in line, the regular customers can be dodgy though - I'm guessing there must be cheap motels/hotels nearby. One of the two times that I visited this store on the way to the MTR was around 7:30am and there was a drunk prostitute in a red cocktail dress with no shoes bumbling about. I was able to avoid physical contact her and get in and out in one piece. The other time there were a couple of non-Asian thugs - I wasn't terrified but I didn't linger around to find out if I needed to be. The staff was OK - typical emotionless minimum wage face. I don't expect any better though. It's a 7-Eleven, not the Ritz.

Enter Wellcome - conveniently located just steps from a few hotels nearby (including the one I was staying at) and pretty reasonably priced to boot! I had many greek yogurt/cereal dinners on the cheap here, as well as a few last minute flight-snack grabs. the staff isn't particularly nice, and are often in the way of the narrow aisles when you're trying to shop, but it's no different than shopping in a market in NYC in that regard. Also keep an eye out for evening markdowns in the fresh bakery / fresh foods department, where you can score some cheap 2-for-1 prices on buns and other delicious goodies. when i return to HK i'll most likely end up here at some point again. Bonus points for being open late!

Shopping in Hong Kong…read more.. We didn't know what kind of store 360° was, so we went in. I wouldn't say that it's just a convenience store because it had a bit more merchandise than just grab and go snacks. There were cookies, Candies, and 3 in 1 coffee packets. I was surprised to see marshmallows with Brown from Line Friends. I had to get it for Kathy H.! LOL! We looked in another 360° and found Brown marshmallows, but no Cony... Sad... Haha! This store was a bit crowded with narrow aisles, customers, and staff restocking the shelves. It was an educational experience!

Snacks galore…read more.. There's something about it that satisfy any type of issues that you're hungry, anxious or just a craving. Here they have just about any type of fun items and though it's not massive it's a lovely place to find something that even the local convenience store won't have. Staff here is always busy restocking items as there is a lot to see and what a fun place to explore what Hong Kong along with various other countries together share the same love of snacking. To be honest this place doesn't break any new boundaries nor presents anything that is ground breaking; its still the good old M&S store with their food items. You could find that with any other M&S store. The only difference is that this place does only that- it sells food and nothing else, which to be me is great because it does without the boring parts (I haven't bought a suit from M&S at least). Someone must have told the M&S people about this particular vacant site because they could not have chosen a better location to set up a food shop. With the bridge from the North Wanchai office towers going towards Queens Road East, this is the perfect place to stop by and grab something whether you are walking back home or taking the MTR. Moreover, there's a gym upstairs (was) which also caters for some people who go to the gym after work. The food is the standard fare and exactly as I want it- Shepherds Pie, Yorkshire Pudding and bourbon chocolate biscuits. yes its 30 degrees out there but I don't care, I miss the rain and the greyness so the closest I can get is with some proper grub. There is also a huge selection of frozen food items ranging from pies to pizzas so there's something for everyone. A small wine selection is also there and I am happy to report that its not as poor as I thought it would be. Never thought i'd say this but good on ya, M&S!

I used to live in the UK and, honestly, even though I liked it, I barely bought anything there unless it was really especial, like some cheeses that I couldn't find in Sainsbury's. But I must admit that I was happy to see M&S here in Hong Kong. And this branch is right downstairs from my gym so I walk past every other day. I can't recall the number of times I've been inside checking something out and haven't bought anything. It's just not worth it, it's SO EXPENSIVE! Just as an example, a little 150 gr. bag of nuts is around 45HKD...come on! And that applies to pretty much anything. If you like ready made 'English' food (sounds appealing huh?) you may like it as that's what they are really good at. You pay a higher price for the convenience but it's good. Two good things about his place: cheese and wine. The cheese selection is not greater than any other supermarket and around the same price, but you can find a couple of odd cheeses there, different from the range at other stores. And I'm a fan of their wines. I found a great one there, that a friend recommended to me, it's a Spanish garnacha grape wine called La Sabrosita. It's a thick red wine priced at less than 100HKD and I love it. For such a small store, the space taken by wines and the selection they have is really impressive. Okay, their chocolates are okay too (I only care for dark ones though). They only have a couple but it's great to find different brands from the main supermarket chains. And this applies to every other item in their store.

You can find a variety of Japanese food products here, along with some other imported items as well. The dessert/cake section is quite extensive and there are multiple bakeries/desserteries. They have Japanese brands/companies but also a couple local ones as well. I tried their Japanese cheesecake tart place and it was quite good. The tart was fresh and warm. Their cakes are detail-oriented and glamorous like the ones you'd see at a department store in Tokyo. There's produce and meats sold here, but they're pretty pricey, as you can imagine. That week was their Taiwanese fair, so the market had an assortment of Taiwanese street food to eat. It can be super crowded here, so keep that in mind if you're not into crowds. But then, if you can't handle crowds, why are you in Hong Kong?

Case in point, it took me 6 months to discover SOGO's basement even though I lived, quite literally, next door. SOGO is a gigantic department store that attracts hordes of shoppers, many with luggage, every hour of every day. I knew all this, I saw the insane mass of limbs and luggage wheels every time I crossed the street. That's why i was deterred from going in until the last month of my stay. What I didn't know was that there was a food paradise tucked underneath all the people and the floors. The SOGO grocery store is similar to other high end grocery stores, but with a Japanese focus. Very clean, very large, and with many exotic varieties at a premium price point. There is an area in the middle that sells an assortment of Japanese snacks: dango, matcha tea, sun-dried squid, etc. To be honest, I never actually bought anything from the grocery store but I did go for SOGO's assortment of ready-to-eat food kiosks, all imported from Japan, all amazing. There's a quiche place with an array of the most beautiful quiches on display (fake, but still pretty), there's a cheese tart place (BAKE) that puts a dent in my heart and wallet because the tarts are so delicious and overpriced. There are Japanese sweets, Japanese cakes, and foreign snacks that a certain Japanese shop has repackaged for the Asian population. Beard Papa (cream puffs), Juchhheim (German layered cake), iCremeria (ice cream), Kobe Beef Meat Pie, all evil temptations for someone with an empty stomach. My favourite is Croissant Taiyaki (especially with apple filling): crispy, sugary, flaky pouches that marry French croissants and Japanese Taiyaki at HKD $18 a pop. Sinfully delicious. If you've never been here, drop by. If you're from North America, DEFINITELY MAKE A TRIP HERE. It's unlike anything I've ever seen (though I hear supermarkets like this are everywhere in Japan, lucky...) It may have been a blessing that I discovered it late in my time here in HK.
