Although I've decided that the McDiet Coke from McDonald's is the best, the Diet Coke at Hart's is close second. I have this very specific blend of my Coke cocktail, and it comes out perfect at this Harts. Have you noticed a lot of gas stations don't have very good syrup to put in their fountain drinks? You squirt in some vanilla syrup, and it's just sticky brown water? Or the cherry syrup is factory rejected cough syrup? Not at Hart's! The cups have cute hearts printed on them, and the lid is red - it's just a little detail but it makes my 52oz vats of carbonated goodness a little happier. The donuts there are also great - double chocolate Dunford Donuts that are so fresh, the icing is still soft and gooey. As I walk up to the register, I catch up on the morning gossip with the sweet and chatty ladies up front. They're so friendly, and I think they've given me a personal compliment every time I come to the register. I think I might be as addicted to that attention as the drink I'm purchasing. My main complaint about Hart's is the location and parking. The gas pumps are on the diagonal, and in the mornings the parking lot is a mad mess of cars and delivery trucks. It can be tough to get back onto westbound 7200 South to the freeway.

My dad loves the quick food options..... me, I'm still on the fence about gas station food, but I do love those damn raspberry filled donuts they sell by the box! There are two larger…read moreones both about a mile away if you need more space, but this is great for a quick stop on your way to the freeway. This one only has 8 spots to fill up and normally at least one is open. It can be a little awkward to access them depending on which ones are filled, but they do have extra room around them and multiple driveways to enter or exit from. When I have gone inside, the people working have been nice. They still have a good soda fountain too! Inside is stocked with snacks but not as much hot food since this is one of the smaller locations.

Regarding the car wash--I dunno if they give one to everyone, or what. Clearly they're trying to upsell you on a more expensive one, but when I went there today I got a "you've earned a free car wash you can upgrade" just after swiping my card. Talk about a niche market: People living or working around the Fort Union triangle who are too cheap to get a membership -- or too lazy to drive 5 miles -- to Costco. While the TWO amply lit Maverik "Adventure's First Stop" (less than a mile apart!) were packed, we shared the Shell station with a night clerk and some grizzled dude in an ancient Ford Taurus who parked in front of the door ... and was just there to buy a pack of smokes. There was an old Simon & Garfunkel song, "A Heart in New York", where the song goes "Lookin' down on Central Park, Where they say you should not wander after dark." Well substitute "Central Park" with "the Shell Station on Fort Union Boulevard." I've seen a lot of changes...when we first moved into the neighborhood, they had video poker macjines that did not draw the best crowds. They finally got rod of the machines and replaced that with a taco shop bit that is hit or miss. Bottom line...ask for you receipt. They scan nothing and probably make up amounts.
