This is was on the way back from Ensenada to Rosarito. The guy behind the counter was super polite and helpful with local eateries. Plenty of parking and prices are cheap. read more

The groceries and meats and anything refrigerated is okay, but the produce is questionable. The watermelons were really cheap, and we soon found out why: it was spoiled rotten. The onions and citrus fruits were okay, as were the bananas, so maybe the watermelons were a fluke. At any rate, it was concerning. Maybe we're used to American ways of keeping food, but the flats of eggs were also not refrigerated. But my in-laws, who get fresh eggs locally in ELA, don't refrigerate their eggs right away also... must be an OG thing... However, for low prices and quick checkout for basic staples, this place is convenient. Just be sure to check your food, carefully...

I've looked for them at every supermercado in the OC in addition to all swap meets selling those puffy orange wheel snacks. No luck anywhere. Typically I go to the 7-11 close to where everyone exits off the cruise. This time we decided to venture further and found Calimax. It's apx two blocks northeast to Papas and Beer. It's clean, the selection is decent and they have a ton of chips! :) My Cheetos were 27.50 pesos for 150 grams (4.5 oz) or 13.90 pesos for 100 grams. The math doesn't add up to buy the bigger package but it's still cheaper than buying at a 7-11. I also got some spices, containers of packaged salsa and allergy meds for a fraction of what I would pay in the US. We walked out with two full bags and it was $12 US. Score!! The bank has a better conversion rate than money exchange so I used my credit card everywhere I went. At the time I went, it averaged out to 20+ pesos to 1 US dollar if I charged it vs 18:1 if I had converted my $ for pesos. For those uncomfortable wandering off, i would suggest to travel in pairs. A woman from San Diego who travels here often said anything more than 2 blocks past Papas is sketchy. Calimax would be on the border if that was true.

The prices are fairly comparable. Walmart has a bigger bakery, but you can find acceptable foods at Calimax. I particular recommend the Tilapia which comes frozen. It is stunning. Tajin dried ancho chiles! And dried jerky; syn to the asian jerky that looks like fur.

They are constantly expanding, opening an additional 1,000 to 1,100 per year... that's an average of three stores a day! There's one in Laredo, Texas that I know of. Recently they acquired several existing DK convenience stores in the Southwest states, with plans to rebrand them in the future. Most are open 24/7, usually at the corner of major intersections. The one I went to (between Macheros and Avenida Adolfo López Mateos) was across the street from a 7-Eleven. You can also see another OXXO a couple blocks away. Whenever I told anyone I was going on a cruise, the #1 warning I received was: avoid drinking tap water in Mexico. Purification standards aren't the best here, and you can get very sick (look up Montezuma's Revenge.. not the roller coaster ride at Knott's). So I stopped by to purchase bottled water, better to be safe than sorry! Stick with the major brands like E-Pura (PepsiCo), Ciel (Coca-Cola), Bonafont, etc. Make sure the seal is not broken. Overall it was fun walking around the aisles! Quite a few familiar snacks that I have at home, and lots of interesting ones as well.
