Recently this place has gotten weird. The gun store employees are very suspicious and heady. They act like a rookie cop "knows all" it instead of trying to understand what you are looking for. In today's "anti gun Illinois" all gun enthusiasts need to work together and the attitude of this place has really changed. Ended up buying elsewhere. 5 Star should get Zero Stars. Updated Sat 6/29/2024 ******************* I had a very poor experience with a scheduled and prepaid training class at 5 Star. Less than one hour before the start of class, while I was in the car driving to 5 Star, I received a phone call saying the class was canceled .. because the range was too busy to service me. The class for which I was enrolled had been on the 5 Star calendar for MONTHS, and I was paid about three weeks in advance. It's not like the "management" or staff at 5-Star didn't know what was happening. Canceling less than an hour before class is generally unacceptable. Calling to say the range was too busy to accommodate me is unconscionable. 5-Star effectively told me that my money was not valuable to them. It can take a long time to foster a good relationship. It only takes seconds to destroy one. 5-Star excelled at destroying my opinion of them. 5-Star did issue me a refund, but there's no compensating me for the insult they laid at my feet. 5-Star did offer to reschedule the class but I have decided that 5-Star is dead to me and will NEVER see another penny from me. I have a number of friends in the shooting community, and have asked each and every one to permanently boycott 5-Star. To anyone in "management" at 5-Star .. I hope you see this post. I challenge you to comment publicly on this review, but I doubt that will happen. read more

I transferred a number of firearms from another state to hear. The folks here were super awesome. They helped with all the paperwork to make everything legit, and also advised on the value of the various firearms. They did a great job all the way through the process, since this was the first time I have transferred any guns from one dealer to another. They made the process super smooth and easy. While all this was happening, I had a chance to wander around a bit. The place is very clean and professional. There are not only guns for sale, but also accessories, ammo and the like. They also have an indoor shooting range that will allow anything up to a .50 BMG. Nice. The only issue I had was their COVID restrictions. Yeah, they have a limit on the people on the range at a given time. But the staff was not wearing masks 99% of the time, nor were they enforcing masks on customers. Sure, I get that this is the "red" part of the state, but the coronavirus doesn't discriminate based on your particular politics, regardless of what our moron president might say. Put on your fucking mask and be a good person. I was very disappointed in this regard. Would I come back? Absolutely. They are great and very knowledgeable people in all things firearms. But I would very much appreciate if they disregarded the bullshit politics of infectious disease and wore a goddamn mask. read more

Remarkable staffing; multiple associated training companies cooperate/participate in all types of firearms training available right on the premises, in tremendous classrooms! Enormous inventory encompassing all types of Firearms, for sale in sensational, multiple showrooms......... Fascinating "not-for-sale" items on display, as well as "relics and curios" on permanent display, which I could look at/study for hours!! No kidding! I commented to the sales manager just the other day, that, 5-Star Firearms could be collecting a "cover charge" at the door, ( just to "gain entry"), the facility is SO tremendous, and, people of all types would STILL be "flocking-in"/packing the place!!! Have been shooting at 5-Star since they opened several years ago, have taken my CCW renewal class there, registered & purchased firearms, bought ammo and other accessories, and am a member of the Lake County IL chapter of the national 'A Girl and A Gun', a.k.a. AG & AG, organization for women shooters that 5 Star graciously sponsors on site. Have always found the staff helpful and friendly. The range is clean and well monitored by certified range safety personnel who are available in case of any difficulty with facility equipment, firearm malfunctions, or shooter issues. 5 Star Firearms is full service from gunsmiths to classes for training the new shooter, and also offer specialized classes for concealed carry, gun cleaning, reloading, tactical shooting, self-defense, and first-aid. Their pricing is reasonable and they run special sales too. I highly recommend them as a great place to shoot, learn new skills, buy a new pistol, rifle, shotgun, pick up some ammo and targets, or find some new accessories for what you already have. *Keep in mind that any 2nd Amendment related business in the State of Illinois is under tight scrutiny and must comply 100% with some really gnarly and often unreasonable regulations that make keeping their establishment open very difficult. So don't be put 'off' if the personnel at 5 Star ask you for your FOID, CCW, State ID or question you about your purposes or intent regarding any desired purchase... it doesn't matter if you've been there several times, made several purchases before, whatever.... they're doing their job per the State's regulations, no exceptions. It's a very nice place that makes it possible for us all who want to legally enjoy our 2nd Amendment hobbies...so, support your FFL Dealers. I highly recommend 5 Star. read more

In all the years I've been coming here, I've only had the best of experiences! The Armory is very big and has tons of selection are both new and used pistols and rifles. Salespeople are very knowledgeable and very friendly, and not opinionated. Everybody here is very professional. They have a reasonable amount of ancillary gear but not a ton. If you're into loading your own ammunition, I think these guys are the local place to go. The range it's fairly large, always clean and always friendly. Everybody is very respectful of each other. It is a safe environment although you don't really see the RSO around much. Prices here are very reasonable. As well, they have a great interest in serving our veterans. read more

My family and I have been @ Five Star several times to utilize the range. Every time we have been treated graciously and respectfully. It is a great place to shoot. The air filtration system is one of the best I've been to. My wife was in the market for her first handgun and was shown several models and one in particular was suggested by the very nice sales woman, Kim I believe was her name. New parking lot, and lots of it. Staff are very very friendly and most of all, helpful. They don't just sell, they want you to understand and learn what you are buying. They won't sell to you just to sell something. They have a genuine concern for you. They fully believe in the 2A and will help you protect yourself and family the right way. Ranges are the best around. They clean after each use and have range officers there that watch and help you if your a new shooter. They sell everything you need including lights, pepper spray knifes and yep Outlaw brand Cologne and soaps. Need a purse or wallet to conceal carry? That have it all. read more

If you are looking for a range that treats you like family, like you are one of their own, you just found it!! 5star is full of great people, the range does not compare to the people you will meet here! If you are new to shooting or you are a seasoned shooter this is the best range around in the Chicagoland area. I have at some point seen every member of staff helping people at some point, I have received help also. If you ask you will receive. The range has modern carriers so no waiting for the cable to be reinstalled, these just work! They do that spinny thing too but not sure of the correct terminology. So you can have an awesome time! If you fancy spending a few nights in my favourite resort (the dog house) spend some money and buy that firearm your wife/husband always wanted you to (not) have, enjoy the prolonged visit!! Absolutely the finest indoor range anywhere in northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin. It looks a bit odd from the outside as an old bowling alley or skating rink maybe, but let me tell you inside is outstanding. The lanes are awesome, no cheap cable driven target movers to break, these things roll on steel I-beams. Digital controls (that actually work), with options to run and turn, etc. The staff is knowledgable, friendly, and they keep the flow moving on busy weekends. RSO's are VERY present, which is good. They also don't rent 100s of guns, keeps down on wannabe's. A+ read more

I went there to buy a gun. I had my foid card but it had been many many years since I shoot. So I thought let me take a class. So I did with a friend named Diane. Sue was our teacher. If ya all want a great teacher sue is it. I was so nervous My hands were clammy my friend Diane was worse. Sue said you can do this the 1st couple of shots for Diane & I were bad so bad but Sue said it is ok you both got this by the end of class we were both pretty darn comfortable shooting. Thank you Sue. I recommend Sue if you are looking to learn & buy a gun. She was so kind you have to buy ammo for certain guns which we did but was wrong gun so ammo was wrong so Sue she used her own personal ammo on certain guns we wanted to try & her own guns.That is how I came to buy my new gun. I am interested in obtaining a FOID card with no experience with gun range stores. These people were so helpful thruout the process. They provided all sorts of tips. They helped me step by step thru completing the on line application. My friend had a .22 pistol she wanted cleaned, $30 and the lady walked us thru every step and explained everything to us . The range guy saw we were having probs with the gun and gave it over the the gunsmith who took it apart and re oiled it. He also gave us probaby 2 dozen of his own bullets to try. The range guy extended our time by 15 mins when he saw we were having these probs. I would say Bravo 5 Star Bravo!! read more

5 Star opened their range! The RSO's on duty were great. The lanes are spacious and the controls are easy to operate. The ventilation on the range is outstanding as it quickly removed gunsmoke. Very well lit and temperature was good. Don't be turned off by the fact there is still minor construction to be finished, the range is ready and fun to use!
