I don't know if there are more spectacular views from any bedroom in the whole state of Maine. But lying in bed looking through an enormous picture window out at South Twin Lake and Katahdin in all her glory? Absolutely breathtaking. As was the sunset: reds and pinks and oranges and golds. We couldn't have asked for a lovelier way to finish a day of hiking in Baxter. The property at 5 Lakes Lodge is beautiful; from the expansive green lawn to the tiny private beach, there are plenty of places to sit and watch the loons. The rooms themselves have been meticulously loved and maintained by the owners. It feels like staying in a (fancy) log cabin, only with a spa-like bathroom! Did I mention the views of Katahdin? Just wow. The only hiccup for us was with the hospitality itself. Unlike others' experiences, we felt that owner Rick was gruff with us. It took several back and forths just to reserve the room itself, after that we never received any confirmation email, and when we asked about whether he and his wife were vaccinated/what their masking policy was (considering Millinocket was considered a highly transmissible area at the time) he was quite brusque. Also, while the check-in policy said anytime between 3pm and 9pm, at 5:30pm we received a phone call sternly asking why we weren't there yet. Then, when we declined breakfast in the morning to sit by the water in the sunshine with our coffees, he was outright annoyed with us ("what do you mean you don't want breakfast?!"). Deb, on the other hand, was very friendly and a joy to speak with, but she also seemed quite surprised that we would want to be outside instead of their incredibly hot, closed-up kitchen (where the TV was on, news blaring) on such a beautiful summer morning. I believe these current owners tried to sell before the pandemic and didn't, so maybe we just met them at the wrong time of their BnB owning journey. read more

This is a very beautiful and luxurious stay in the Katahdin area. It's right on the water- so nice to be able to swim, kayak, and relax under the majestic Katahdin. It is truly amazing. The bed was great, the in-room bath great- we just struggled with the owners. The man and woman here make great food and definitely maintain a beautiful property- however I felt reprimanded in every step I took. We had just hiked Katahdin and the car was full of crap, so around 9PM we went out and grabbed some stuff. The male owner came out and asked us what we were doing. Very aggressively. Just grabbing clothes man! We were being quiet and respectful, it was quite alarming. We got breakfast in their B&B kitchen before heading out, and again, the man owner was very cruel. At first I thought he was kidding around, but nope, he is just that mean. Also bad was asking privately the woman owner for an extra roll of toilet paper as we were out, and she berated me for using toilet paper in front of the entire breakfast room full of people. Several times. It was humiliating. It's a view that can't be beat, and I'm really grateful I got to stay here, but I can't recommend a place that is mad at having well-behaved human beings in their place. If you're gonna charge that much for a room, let your guests feel like they can exist without being a major burden to you. Like, what? Sorry. read more

I stayed for 5 days and they exceeded every expectation. Upon check in everything was spotless; I stayed in Eagles Nest and I was in awe of how well equipped it was. I cooked every day and didn't need to bring anything but food. The views are spectacular; sitting in the adirondack chairs for sunset was beautiful. I highly recommended having breakfast every morning. You get delicious food and get to meet the owners AND the other visitors. The owners, Rachel, Missy, Brian & Matt make you feel at home and let you do your own thing. I like it so much I have made reservations for October and bringing some of my friends. read more

Beautiful setting, great lodge décor, comfortable beds and views that are spectacular. The breakfasts were delicious and the hosts friendly and helpful. We biked the Penobscot River Trails then came back to kayak briefly before the rain set in. But really, just relaxing in the rocker while looking at Katahdin was satisfying. We have to go back to spend time in the Katahdin Woods and Waters area too. You will not be disappointed at 5 Lakes. read more

You couldn't ask for a more restful, idyllic and charming setting to take in nature and relax and from which to branch out and enjoy all of the sports and adventure Maine has to offer within 30 minutes. Go for an amazing run either on a dirt road around South Twin Lake or on a wonderful dirt trail that goes for miles. Enjoy a sea plane excursion over the top of knives edge of Mt. Katahdin on the Appalachian trial--Jim Strang and Sean fly@katahdinair.com. Fly fish with Greg Friel (wonderful guide) +1 (207) 745-7518 out the Golden Road and on the river near class 5 rapids. Or spend the day lounging around and soaking up all the local knowledge and advice about the area which the proprietors, Rick and Debbie, are eager to provide (they grew up in the area and built the bed and breakfast after years of hospitality experience running other outfits). The rooms and views are breathtaking and every detail has been carefully considered. We loved our stay here. We stayed in the Eagles nest. The beds were so comfortable. We did not want to leave. Everything was clean and perfect. Also, the property is probably one of the most beautiful places you will ever go. Gorgeous lake with an extensive shoreline with views Mount Katahdin across the lake. There are kayaks and canoes for use, a cozy outdoor fire pit by the lake and the owner took my husband and son out to see eagles and their babies. Will definitely go back. read more

I've been visiting at 5 Lakes Lodge for a few years and now, I can't wait to return every year. Rick and Deb are absolutely wonderful hosts that seem eager to share their knowledge of the region of Baxter State Park and way beyond. They add so much to the experience from trail advice to scenic boat rides (where you may get to watch eagles). Oh and the breakfast will make you feel incredibly spoiled!! The lodge itself is charming, comfortable, and graced with the sound of loons. If you are looking to take an adventure into the North Woods of Maine, this is a great place to start. If that isn't enough to get you out there, Sammy (the dog) will wag her tail and then, you'll be in love with every bit of the experience. read more

My husband and I stayed here last summer while in town to hike Katahdin and had a great experience. Where to start...the owners were fantastic and gave great recommendations on the hike (routes, time, park information) which eased our nerves. They rooms were very clean, cozy and comfortable with fantastic views. We sat in the rockers looking over the water and couldn't have been more peaceful. The available kayaks were great to explore with and the lounge chairs on the "beach" were a great place to read a book. My only regret of our trip was not staying at 5 Lakes longer. Wanted to find a place close to Baxter State Park that was a bit better than your run of the mill old school cottage. Booked 3 nights at 5 lakes and couldn't have made a better choice! Everything about the place exceeded expectations and we wish that we had planned for a longer stay. Rick and Debbie were exceptional hosts and go out their way to provide you with accurate advice regarding all local activities including restaurants, hiking trails or auto routes. An unexpected bonus to our stay was a boat ride with Rick out on the lake where we were able to view Bald Eagles at close range. During our stay we also booked the fly and dine with Katahdin Air which was an unforgettable experience. I would highly recommend a stay in this beautiful location. Sunset on the lake is stunning with Mt Katahdin in command of the horizon. We'll never forget the glider rockers in our room and the sound of the loons while we watched the sunset! read more
