We started with five in-home sessions when our Bernese Mountain Dog was five months old, then enrolled her in the two-week Stay & Train program at 7 1/2 months. The combination was exactly what we were looking for. The in-home sessions taught us how to work with our dog, and the Stay & Train helped her become reliable even in high-distraction environments. Our goal was a well-mannered giant-breed dog who would be enjoyable to live with, confident around people, and a pleasure to take anywhere. Joe helped us transform a puppy who liked to jump, play bite, and pull on the leash into a well-mannered dog with reliable obedience and excellent leash manners. A month after training, she's doing great, and the skills have held up because we continue practicing them at home. What impressed me most was Joe's approach. He genuinely loves dogs, and it shows. His training is kind, respectful, and fun, so she was always excited to work with him. So as a last-ditch effort, we reached out to Dogtopia in Fishers. They had space for us! They were a lifesaver. One interesting thing that Dogtopia does before they board a dog they've never boarded before is do a little doggie meet-and-greet. Your dog just meets some staff and checks out the facility. It takes about an hour, but my dog loved meeting new people and smelling all of the things. It was slightly inconvenient for me (why can't you just take my dog and take my money?!), but I understand the reasoning behind it. My dog loves people but doesn't like being boarded, but the people at Dogtopia gave him a lot of attention and love, which he loves and made him comfortable. He came back home super chill and not at all stressed, which was a great thing to see. He obviously liked his stay!

We had the opportunity to hunt pheasants at a game form and had a great day with the dog. The area we were hunting was like a swamp and full of briars and brambles. By the end of the day the dog was just a mess and I really had no way of getting her cleaned up to go back to my nephew's house. On the drive home I started calling dog groomers knowing it was probably impossible to find somebody to help us with little or no advanced notice. I contacted Dogtopia and they told me they could squeeze us in if we could get a copy of the dog's rabies vaccine certificate. I called my vet. The vet emailed me the rabies certificate. 45 minutes later I dropped the dog off and in an hour she looked amazing. This is the kind of customer service that goes way above and beyond what is ordinarily expected. The staff was helpful and friendly and they clearly loved dogs. Dogtopia earned a five star review. The place is extremely clean and organized the other one star review on here is completely unfounded.

Every team member, from Lindsay (who took my first call) to Collette (who talked to me about previsit meds) to the friendly team at the check out desk, has treated our family with warmth, respect, and care. And Dr. Crowe knocked our socks off. She transformed our highly anxious (even when medicated), stressed-out pup into her buddy. She engaged kindly with him, was not fearful, got down on his level, and genuinely seemed to like him. She distracted him with games and treats and snuggles and was able to administer three vaccinations easily. I did have to pay a deposit that was put toward the cost of the appointment. You wait in your car until they signal you to come in and then you have a fairly large room to sit in with your dog. She reviewed the issues that we put on the forms and watched our dog walk around the room and commented on his behavior. She provided some tips and changed up the dosage on his medication and let us know the trainer would be in contact to come to our house and help as well. The trainer came out about 4-6 weeks later and gave us more feedback and interacted with the dog and we had a follow up with them both at the office after. Their insight and the tips they have provided have been so helpful! I feel like I have the tools I need to help my dog be the best version of himself and a resource for any future behavioral needs.

I started volunteering here a few months ago, and I've been impressed with HSHC from all angles - the volunteer orientation, the facility, the staff. While it's not ideal for animals to be at a shelter, this place is a top-notch place to stay until the cats and dogs find their "fur"ever homes. Please note if you are looking to adopt that the building doesn't open to the public until noon each day. You can browse the dog rooms and catteries, but you cannot pet or touch an animal until you've completed an application and been approved. Read all the policies online to be prepared! You can even submit an adoption application online.
