Opt to sit inside near an open fire or outside where there is an abundance of plants and wildlife - there's even a neighbourhood Peacock! We had toast for two, coffee and a tea - served by their friendly staff which cost only a few pound. Next time as apposed to driving straight there I would choose to take on the Taff Trail ending at the Forest Tea Rooms as its apparent most use it as a post cycle / long walk reward.

I walked through the doors and if someone had turned the colour off I could have been in a classic cafe during the late 50's. And I don't mean that in a bad way. It's all quite new and clean inside but has this quaint post war feel to it helped by the waitresses wearing little frilly hats and matching aprons. I choose a coronation chicken baquette and a pot of tea for two (there was 2 of us). The baquette was large, fresh and its filling tasty. It also came with some crisps on the side - which I thought was a nice touch. The service was swift and polite and the cost very reasonable. I've you have the same lunchtime dilemma as me and happen to find yourself in Caerphilly you could do a lot worse than pop in to Glanmors.

While it may not look very fashionable on the outside and the regular inhabitants wouldn't look out of place on the bowls green, this quaint tea room does get a surprising amount of attention from tourists and passers by, mainly due to its location of being directly opposite Caerphilly Castle. But while people may come in primarily for the view, they stay for the food, with delicious snacks served up daily, from cakes and scones to sandwiches and pasties. With waitresses dressed in traditional tea room attire, apron and all, there is a traditional feel to the restaurant that is distinctly unique and noticeably lacking in most modern coffee shops; that good, old fashioned TLC that you don't get in chain stores like Starbucks and Costa, where you are rushed in and out with out so much as a "please" or "thank you". At Glanmor's you really get the impression everything you see is freshly made and everything is done to the finest standard possible, and that hard work shows through in both the presentation of the shop and the taste of the food. Out of curiosity, I dropped by the other day to sample the goods on offer (the coffee that is, not the waitresses), and as I was feeling the weight of the afternoon carbs crash, my weapon of choice was my usual in this situation; a black coffee. That's a black coffee: not an Americana, not a café noir, not a damn intergalactic cup of the night sky - a black-freaking-coffee. Pretentious names aside, I love a good, strong cup of black coffee and Beano's well and truly delivered. By the time I'd finished my second cup, I could almost see through time and was well and truly recharged. I take my hat off to you Beano's; despite looking oddly out of place in Caerphilly, you have given my sceptical nature a well-deserved kick in the teeth. He has been in this shop since the end of the 19th Century, and once stood outside - although today (in his old age!) he's retired inside, and stands dominating the window display instead. I believe the shop has changed hands over the years, but it still retains that old-fashioned charm and I think it is the only specialist shop of this kind in Wales. It stocks an impressive array of cigars and tobacco products, many of which are imported from all over the globe. There's loose and packet pipe tobacco, hand-rolling tobacco, pipes and pipe sundries (including Dunhill, Peterson, Falcon, Parker, and other big names), cigars, lighters, and old-fashioned cigarette cases. Apart from all the smoking paraphernalia, however, they also sell a range of products mainly aimed at gentlemen - some of which could make nice gifts for older generations, including shaving brushes, razors and cut-throats, hip flasks and pocket watches.

God I love this place…read more I guess as a former smoker (or someone whose addiction's probably just on hold at the moment - it has yet to be determined), this shop has a real appeal for me. Apart from selling my once-loved American Spirit cigarettes, The Bear Shop always makes me feel like I've been transported back in time, to the age of Victorian Britain or something - especially with that massive grizzly bear in the corner. Tucked away in the Wyndham Arcade, the Bear Shop is worth hunting for. With the best selection of tobacco in town, it offers not only lighters, pipes, and cigarette cases but specialty gifts like flasks and pocket watches. Plus, I love buying a few Cuban cigars for the boys back home, as I'm sure you already know, we're not allowed their goods in the ol' US of A!
