I believe the shop has changed hands over the years, but it still retains that old-fashioned charm and I think it is the only specialist shop of this kind in Wales. It stocks an impressive array of cigars and tobacco products, many of which are imported from all over the globe. There's loose and packet pipe tobacco, hand-rolling tobacco, pipes and pipe sundries (including Dunhill, Peterson, Falcon, Parker, and other big names), cigars, lighters, and old-fashioned cigarette cases. Apart from all the smoking paraphernalia, however, they also sell a range of products mainly aimed at gentlemen - some of which could make nice gifts for older generations, including shaving brushes, razors and cut-throats, hip flasks and pocket watches.

Apart from selling my once-loved American Spirit cigarettes, The Bear Shop always makes me feel like I've been transported back in time, to the age of Victorian Britain or something - especially with that massive grizzly bear in the corner. Tucked away in the Wyndham Arcade, the Bear Shop is worth hunting for. With the best selection of tobacco in town, it offers not only lighters, pipes, and cigarette cases but specialty gifts like flasks and pocket watches. Plus, I love buying a few Cuban cigars for the boys back home, as I'm sure you already know, we're not allowed their goods in the ol' US of A!

They have a wide selection which ranges from the cheap cigars up to the specially imported Cubans. The staff are very knowledgeable and can tell you exactly what you would like to know about the cigar. It can be quite strange because when you ask the staff about a particular tobacco plant the staff will talk about the cigars as though they are talking about a fine wine. It can be quite interesting but also slightly strange when someone talks about a cigar being 'creamy'. They of course also sell cigarettes, lighters and other smoking paraphernalia. This is a true gentleman's store and is worth a trip particularly if you (like me) are partial to the odd celebratory cigar.

Whatever the case, it was a smart move to name the business in this way. Not only is there no confusion around what they do, but you can see their sign from Pembrokeshire! With such a large competitor in Newslodge just a few doors up the road, Newsagent has to employ al of the tactics that it can to compete! In terms of what they stock, there's fewer surprises! They have all the nationals and local papers and a reasonable number of magazines. They also carry greetings cards and stationary, both of which are of a reasonable quality. They also do a fair amount of food, and household products... and they do two rolls of loo roll for a quid... always useful to know! So they are not only handy, they are definitely worthwhile. I have been told by the staff that they sell 'alternative gifts and paraphernalia' but I didn't see anything my mum would like for Christmas. But really they've got some great little 'bits & pieces'. They do have an insanely random selection of stock, but they are good for Zippo lighters, flavoured Rizla and incense; basically if you can light it or light things with it you can but it here. They also do t-shirts...but I can't imagine that's why you'd pay them a visit. They are also perfect if you smoke a shisha pipe because they sell coals (and I think fruit tobacco) and are the only place in town I have found that does.

Its not as nice a store as the head Shop in Bedminster, the staff are not as friendly and it doesn't have a sex swing on display :-)!! Now, initially I liked this place simply because I think the word 'newskiosk' is a beautiful creation of the English language. Then I realised that this neat little place had some other uses too. Like provided people with chocolate bars and newspapers and tobacco (not that I smoke), and the like. It's one of those exceptionally handy shops that's just in the right place at the right time, all of the time. It's a corner shop, only it's not on the corner of anything. It's all out there on its own. I admire its courage.
