When I was referred by a friend for a personal success intensive workshop with EQ, I decided to…read morejump on their website. What I saw was a commercial website, advertising different kinds of events. Not the kind of website you'd be expecting for a personal development workshop. Reviews on their website were good though so I thought I would give it a go. Forty nine bucks for 2 days, you can't go that wrong. But from my sixth sense, I could tell that it was probably not the right choice. I showed up on the day of the event. We were escorted bya a crowd of ladies all dressed the same way with tight blue tshirts and tight black jeans. The venue was not very inviting, an old brick theatre that smelled like dust inside. We were then asked to move into the amphi theatre. And that's where the show begins! The guests were sitting in the main seating area and the showman Peter Conna arrived on stage. First of all, for a personal development workshop, I would have expected a different seating structure such as a roundtable to allow better communications between everyone. Rather than THE guru on one side and the crowd on the other. Although at first, I thought his words were quite inspiring, I soon realised that it was actually pretty much basic wisdom talk out from the books. Peter made a show out of himself, putting a lot of humor in his speech, always trying to make the audience laugh about different things. Well I guess that's good if you're here for a comedy show but I had not come for that. He started making jokes on how certain people in the audience can potentially meet the love of their life in this type of workshop, and that it has happened in the past. This was not appropriate and it even made people feel uncomfortable. But one thing that I soon realised was that Peter has no listening skills at all. Pretty bad for someone who wants to become a councellor. He would interact with the audience, asking questions but barely giving enough time for people to respond. This created really bad vibes. One lady would try to talk but he would cut through the conversation, not listening to her. She decided to leave he was so rude. Another time, he would ask a question, and I tried to raise my hand to say something but I got totally ignored. He could hear me but did not even look at me. So I tried again, but completely ignored me again. Arrogance is the key word that comes out from his behaviour. Probably due to his expansive career experiences from real estate to financial planning, master of education, and now studying councelling. What can you expect from someone who has studied business, worked in real estate and financial planning? This workshop is truly a scam. Do you think you can really expect quality and ethical practices from a company that advertises its workshops valued at 2000 dollars on its website but provides discounts down to 49 dollars? That's just a way for them to get people to come so they can then sell their expensive 10 000 training. His goal: make people feel like S--- about their lives, and then play with people's emotions and get the most vulnerable one to buy the 10K full training. This makes me sick to know that such businesses can operate that way. My last words, I ended up leaving after 3 hours of workshop as I could not stand the speaker's arrogance and behaviour....and finally the icing on the cake... After 2 hours we were put into different groups (monkey, lion and pigs). The EQ team leader was a girl from NZ. Having lived there, i tried to approach her and start a conversation but she was rude and unfriendly. She would ask everyone to introduce themselves but I could tell from the way she was acting that she could not care less about the people in her team. She assigned someone from the guests to be a team leader. And that's where it all went crazy. We were expected to behave like monkeys, they started singing the monkey song, and at that point, I was like "what the H--- am I doing here?" We were asked to go back to the amphitheatre and dance on stage. They turned the lights off and put the disco music and lights on. I felt this was so unappropriate. I decided to leave. I advised a staff member who asked me to return my workshop booklet (a bunch of photocopies with exercises). I said I wanted to keep it but she insisted that I return it. I said that I had paid for that workshop and I wanted to keep it, but she would not let me go. She said that I had to give it back due to copyright issues. I was seriously mad at that point. I left the book with anger and walked away.I heard from my friend who stayed until the end of the workshop that Peter tried to sell his 10000 dollars workshop at the end. He acted wonderfully to get people to register by pretending that there were only 2 spaces left (the plan was totally devised to get the most vulnerable one to book - which apparently worked). So disgusting! I should have followed my instinct when I first checked out their website.
