I've been bringing both of my children here now for a month at the recommendation of my neighbour…read more(her husband and children go here as well). We had previously tried out Jiu Jitsu two years ago at a different St. A dojo and did not have a good experience. At first, I was a little apprehensive to give it another try and the prices at Arashi-Do are higher than the other dojos I had looked at but decided to give it a go because my son's best friend wanted to sign up at the same place together. You can contact them via facebook, email, or by telephone. I initially sent in an email with questions about the program and received a telephone call in return from co-owner, Monitor Stephenie, and I was put at ease. Monitor Stephenie and Professor Tyson (married couple) co-own this franchise location and run the dojo together. They are fabulous - I cannot say enough great things about them. I've got one kiddo in Mini Monkeys (30 minutes 2 x a week) and one kiddo in Junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (45 minutes 2x a week). You pay the same for your membership whether you are in the 30 minute, 45 minute, or 60 minute classes - that I don't like but that's more to do with the franchise and the way Arashi-Do is set up than this particular location set up. The gym itself is bright, clean, spacious, and well-ventilated (I have not overheated as a parent sitting on the sidelines once). There are change rooms with a curtain as well as a washroom. What I'm really liking about Arashi-Do 1) that it's got a well-defined children's program and there is a difference between the mini monkeys and JBJJ. 2) Professor Tyson is phenomenal. My 9 year old daughter is completely comfortable with him and my 6 year old son thinks he is the bee's knees. Monitor Stephenie is fabulous, super kid friendly, approachable and easy to talk to. They really have a great balance as Professor and Monitor. Another neat thing is that they take their belts, stripes, and grading SERIOUSLY. The Master flies in from Brazil once (maybe twice) a year for all graded exams. Professor Tyson does regular stripe and colored bar tests but I believe the belt colour exams only occur when Mestre Sylvio da Matta Behring, 8th degree coral belt, visits. You can read more about their program on their website: http://arashido.com/programs/brazilian-jiu-jitsu Again, so happy to have found a dojo that works for our family and everyone feels comfortable and safe in. Discipline is foremost here but everything happens in a really structured and kid friendly manner. I'll definitely do an update in the future!

A Haven of Mastery and Mentorship at Bravé MMA…read more.. I'm a 46 year old blue belt with at desk job. BJJ has been the best thing that i have done in my life. Nothing worth doing is easy and this goes for BJJ. The rewards are the people you meet and the knowledge you gain and share. It is very fullfilling. Additonally, for several hours a day, focusing on BJJ takes my mind off of any other problems that I have whether its a stressful job or a bad day in general. They say meditaton is good, well....bjj is great and gets you in shape too). At Bravé MMA, my training experience has been transformed under the expert guidance of Coach Kenny and his older brother, Coach KB, an MMA champion. Coach Kenny's deep knowledge and approachable style in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, combined with Coach KB's exceptional skill in boxing, BJJ and Muay Thai, create an unparalleled learning environment. Their commitment to each student's growth, whether in competitive spirit or skill development, is evident in every class. The gym's focus on safety, personalized training, and fostering a positive, supportive atmosphere sets it apart, in my opinion. Unlike my previous gym experience, Brave MMA emphasizes skill and personal development over a transactional, attendance-based approach. This nurturing environment, where challenges are met with encouragement and individual strengths are honed, makes Bravé MMA a unique and rewarding place for anyone passionate about martial arts. Kenny is an absolute treasure and truly is a master of his craft. The coaching staff here are so passionate about what they're doing and it shows. Would highly recommend to anyone- my son loves their classes but they also have women's kickboxing as far as I know. After a few months of training I noticed a massive improvement in my son's confidence and his general mood as well. If you're looking for a gym that genuinely loves what they do and takes care of their members like family then look no further, brave is top shelf!

I talked with some of the other parents and one who had been going here for two years with his daughter. He mentioned that they had tried 2 other Jiu-Jitsu locations before his young daughter felt at home here. From the moment you meet Sensei Stephane Dore, you know you've come to the right place for little kids. He's warm and inviting and my kids (4 & 7) were immediately at ease with him. I was surprised that he jumped right into teaching flips and falls for the introductory class at the open house - impressive! Parking is limited (Riel Industrial) but not impossible - be sure to park in the allowed areas. I like how the big roll up industrial doors allow for lots of fresh air and light in the dojo - and the mesh netting to keep out bugs is a nice touch. I had initially only thought about signing up our older child but with a 50% discount on additional family members, I quickly hopped on board and gave in to my pleading 4 year old for the Little Kids Ninja Class as well :-) I'll be sure to write an update in a few months time...

Since our…read morechildren have mentioned an interest in the martial arts for a while now, we quickly took advantage of the offer and enrolled our seven-year old daughter and four-year old son in the session. Stephane, their instructor was absolutely fantastic with the kids! He showed them breathing techniques and got their blood pumping by showing them how to fall properly ,holds and grappling maneuvers. They even had a little grappling session at the end of the class! Even though there was only eight kids in this particular session, Stephane had another instructor there as well, to help out with not only the demonstrations, but also so all the kids got some nice individual attention. Both Stephane and his colleague (I am so sorry that I didn't catch his name) had a wonderful demeanour to them and they treated all the kids with respect and in turn, they seemed to treat their instructors the same way back. We liked the atmosphere so much that we signed up both of our rugrats for two months and they were both ecstatic! We'll see if they keep up the interest in their lessons come November. Regardless of how our own kids' martial arts interest turns out, if you are interested in Jiu-Jitsu, you can't go wrong with Stephane at St. Albert Jiu-Jitsu.

Being a student, a helper, a junior instructor with the leadership team & my final journey as instructor with my dear friend Jessica. Even when I retired, it has always been in my heart - I can still recall my self-defense, some of my poomsae's, step defense, board/brick breaking, life lessons & the cherished relationships I've made. I must stress the importance of my training as I unfortunately in my life found myself in a very scary violent domestic violence relationship. I truly do feel that my taekwondo training possibly saved my life, I believe in multiple situations I found myself in - it detoured him from the volatile confrontation turning into a very real scary physical one from happening. It also gave me the confidence to stand up for myself & create a 'safe plan' to leave this toxic relationship... now that I have my son I cant stress the importance of self-defense. I brought my son & nephew for their first class & it was a very heart melting moment for me as I watched my beloved head master Derek Sadler tie my son's & my nephews white belt for their first class. As he did mine many years ago. There is no doubt in my mind my son & nephew are is great hands. I'm looking forward to watching their journey & watching many more belts being tied. I take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class here with renowned BJJ Black Belt and Pro MMA Fighter, Andrew McInnes and my boyfriend is a pro MMA fighter and member of the gym's MMA Pro Team and student as well. The gym itself is easy to find in the Campbell Business Park with plenty of parking and clear signage. Inside - it's HOT. The gym is kept very warm which is overwhelming at first, but compared to other gyms I've trained at is a savior the next day for hard worked muscles and joints. The mats are clean, safe and free of rips and gaping areas that could catch toes. There are two levels inside - the main mat area where the classes are held, and a smaller, more private upstairs area with full mats for private classes and smaller classes. There are two washrooms and a private shower room - monthly membership is extremely reasonable with no hidden costs or mandatory fees for seminars. I started training at Complete almost 2 years ago and it's changed my life. The sense of family and closeness is strong and the people I train with are not only my training partners, but also some of my closest friends - it's not unusual to have a group of us out after class or to see a giant crew of CFMA members together at local fighting events and tournaments. It's a tight knit group! BJJ Instructor, Andrew, teaches class Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings - as well as a kids' jiu jitsu class for kids 4+ on Fridays (I'm pretty sure) Classes are thorough and include detailed instruction, intensive drilling and live rolling. I have taken classes with several other instructors at a couple other gyms in the city and while I haven't had a bad experience, I can honestly say that Andrew's style of teaching, coaching and class conduct is by far my favourite. The gym also offers a Boot-Camp fitness class, kick-boxing and MMA classes with excellent, friendly and capable instructors. It's Pro Team is host to some of Edmonton and area's finest professional MMA fighters (including a couple current UFC fighters as well!) Saturday mornings are host to Open Mat where we come down to practise, get some rolls in, hit the bags and even just hang out for fun. CFMA is a highly competitive gym. The bootcamp class does events like The Spartan Race, the BJJ Students are eager to compete in local tournaments and show up to support the team even when they're not competing. Members who are professional fighters are active and successful in MMA events across the province and we have a great time together cheering on our training partners. If you're looking for a place to try out a style of martial art and are hoping for a casual, relaxed environment with friends rather than stuffy formalities, hidden costs and forced seminars - Complete is the place to try out. If you're looking for an excellent BJJ gym where belts and acknowledgements are awarded as necessary and as skill level increases and not by a punch card with a price tag - Complete is the place for you. If you're looking for a real-life, competitive instruction with professional, accomplished teachers and coaches - Complete is your gym Come try it :)
