To be completely honest, I still don't know how I feel about this hostel.
Pros: Location is FANTASTIC. Step out the door and you're in Grand Place. It also had a nice kitchen. No one stole any of my food, and there was free tea, coffee, and hot chocolate available. A walking tour was also offered twice daily, although I never took advantage of it so I can't speak to the quality. I was in an all female suite where the bathroom and sleeping quarters were connected, which was nice for when I had to get up in the middle of the night to use the facilities. Check-in staff were friendly and printed my boarding pass for me the night before I departed.
Cons: It was extremely cold, especially at night. I stayed at the end of November and was freezing any time I was in the hostel. I only took my jacket off inside when cooking because I was afraid I might singe it. The kitchen is only open from 7:30-23h, so no midnight snacking. When I popped in at 13h30 one day to make lunch before going on a chocolate tour, it was also closed for cleaning. Now, I want a clean kitchen as much as the next person, but it seems silly to me to close the kitchen during prime lunching hours.
I took a shower the first night I arrived, and the water was completely cold. You can't control the water temperature; there's one button that turns it on, that's all. You can't even turn it off when you want, the water just runs for a bit and then shuts off automatically. This also means you have to keep pushing it continually throughout your shower in order to keep the water going. The second night I stayed, I showered in the morning, and the temperature was slightly warmer. Thinking I had found the trick to it, on the third day, I also showered in the morning. Freezing again. It was cold on the fourth and final night as well.
My biggest complaint was the maid service. Every day at around 10am, staff would show up to clean. Fine, but they could at least close the door when they come in so I'm not giving a free peep show to whoever walks by the door. I was literally changing when the maid walked in and she just left the door wide open. As I had the bed directly across from the door, I think you can see why this would be a problem for me. One day I overslept (yes, I was hungover from staying out at the bar next door until 3am). Realizing I only had about a half hour before the maid showed up, I rushed to take a shower, which was easy, because the water was so cold I didn't really want to linger. When I got out, I was alone with the maid, and of course, the door to our room was wide open. My solution was to take my clothes to the bathroom and change, which should have worked fine, but then the maid chased me out of the bathroom! She laid all her cleaning supplies on the counter next to my toiletries as I was trying to hurry up and brush my teeth so I could get out of the room (and thus out of her way.) I understand the staff must do their jobs, but just really now, work with me a little bit, OK? Finally, check-in for the location I stayed at is not actually AT the hostel, it's at the "main" location a few blocks away. This was fine as I'd read the reviews on booking.com, and they also mentioned it in my confirmation email, so it didn't exactly take me by surprise, but it was still inconvenient.
Overall, I'd probably give this hostel a one-star but the location alone earns it a star, and I was happy that the staff at the main location printed my boarding pass, saving me a 50€ charge from my airline, but in the end, I still don't think I'd recommend it. read more
