I was worried that if it were too cold we wouldn't see too many alligators. The weather turned out to be perfect, in the low 70s, and we saw lots of alligators. There is a gift shop where you can buy drinks, snacks, and souvenirs. You can look around the property while you wait for here toward it again. There is a fenced pond rehabilitating injured alligators, a pool with baby alligators that they let you hold at the end of the tour, and lots of information about local wildlife. Our captain was fantastic. He gave us a lot of facts on the wildlife as well as history of the area. He was great at making sure everyone on the boat could see, as he would rotate the boat in a circle making sure everyone got a "front seat." He brought food out to the feeding sites of raccoons, squirrels, and wild hogs, which brought them all running. We saw an old trappers cabin, an old teepee made of palms, a mass grave, and the grave of the local video priestess that died in 1915. And, of course, the alligators. At the end of the thought, the captain showed us some of his pets--turtles, crawfish, and a baby alligator named Bruce, which we got to hold.

Luckily, our tour guide knew the swamp like the back of his hand and found our lone alligator, "toothless," backed into a hole, keeping herself warm. It was really hidden, and I would have missed it 10 times if I had driven by. We also saw other wildlife, including birds, an eagle, and a raccoon. Plus, he operates on the edge and clipped the wood on some old water blinds. We drove ourselves there, so we didn't have to incur the pickup or drop-off fee. Competitive pricing and friendly staff. Souvenirs, snacks, beverages, and a restroom are available. Remember to try to go on a warm day so you can see more gators. If not wear gloves and a hat cause it gets cold.

Our driver was Brie (like the cheese, she said) and on the ride to the tour she kindly let us know that if there was someplace else we wanted to be dropped off afterwards just to let her know and she could see what she could do. Upon being dropped off you walk up to what looked like a converted mobile home turned office. You walk in and there's a stuffed crocodile sitting on a table to give you some perspective as to how big these things are. You walk up to a counter where you check in with your reservation, sign your life away on some wavers and receive you pass. Then you wait outside for your tour guide to call you up. Our tour guide was "Jacob." Very knowledgeable. Very entertaining. At a certain point there seemed to be a rain cloud that showed up out of know where and almost felt as if it was chasing us. So Jacob tried his best to get us out from under it. It kind of worked. We weren't drenched. A little rain didn't hurt no one! We were told that crocs aren't very active during the wintertime but we were still able to see a couple big ones, a few babies, an adolescent and some bald eagles. For your first visit to Nawlins this is a must. I mean you can opt for the pontoon boats but why opt for that when you can whiz around the bayou on a boat that feels like it's flying...lol!

This is part of the day tour we booked at a different company but since they operate independently, i thought i would give them a fair review. Our swamp tour was only a little group of 3 couples and our baby, the tour was interactive where all if us we're in a discussion (especially my husband) and we learned a lot of interesting facts about swamps, taxes, gators, etc. We had a great time and we saw some gators too, not the big ones but good enough for pics. My baby enjoyed the breeze since it was so darn humid this time of year. LoL! I suggest taking some swamp tours while visiting New Orleans. Our tour guide was very nice and accommodating, he knows this stuff pretty good :-)

The lack of plants in the front yard made the houses looked naked to me, which was bizarrely intriguing. Just cars and houses and the occasional tricycle or trampoline. Once we arrived, we had a lovely tour with Captain Brian. The boat ride was relaxing and informative, through a wide and still canal, with gorgeous lush flora and fauna all around. Captain Brian was very knowledgeable about the swamps as well as the local wildlife, but he's fairly dry. He gave it a good effort and tried to make it fun, and even cracked a few jokes. Somebody asked "where's the marshmallows?" and he replied wittily that the marshmallows were holding us in anticipation, as we didn't want to have all of our fun at once. It was fun to see Brian throw marshmallows into the water and watch (and photograph) the gators snapping them up, and we definitely had plenty of opportunity before the end of the day. Interestingly, this is the only parish where it's legal to feed the alligators, and when I asked Brian why he was able to explain to me about the ethics of alligator hunting, and why this particular parish it was acceptable to feed them as long as one did it properly. It was also fascinating to learn about tagging, and how every season gator skins get cut in a certain way to identify what year they're from (without ever repeating the pattern). As we were making our way back to the dock, Brian pulled out a huge (in my eyes) alligator head and passed it around so we could all check it out. This was fun and informative to see up close, and also made for some fun photos. My recommendation: the tour would have been more interesting if they made it more personal. It would have been interesting to hear about his family's experience, and what it's like living out in the bayous of Louisiana. All the same, I can easily recommend a swamp tour. It's a fairly short tour, but I felt like short was the perfect length, as it's a little boring compared to the rest of New Orleans.
