This is a popular pub, a couple of miles outside Raglan, focused mainly on providing food. The…read morerambling building has a number of different areas in which to eat, some more traditionally like a pub, others more like a restaurant. The focus in the extensive menu is on traditional pub favourites, done to a very good standard. There were a lot of families eating on our visit, including at least three birthday celebrations. Most options come with chips (even the curry and chilli options come with rice and chips - popular in South Wales. But you can ask for rice only). At first sight, prices might seem a little high for the area - £15 and upwards for mains - but not when you see the portions! We saw a number of people through the evening leaving with a doggy bag, so clearly they're used to that. We had the Mediterranean tart with sauté potatoes and fresh vegetables, served with a tomato and basil sauce with a salad garnish on the side £15; and the 12 oz gammon steak with an egg (with pineapple is the alternative) so that a tomato mushroom and chips (£17). Both are very good and, as anticipated, the portions were generous. (We were glad that we had not had starters, but others tucked in happily) Service was extremely good throughout: particularly so at the outset, when we were shown to our table, which was next to 2 large parties. We asked if we could move to somewhere a bit quieter, and they were very willing to accommodate us. Thereafter, service was very attentive from the plethora of staff. The owner also came over a couple of times to check that everything was alright. They have a full bar available, with a reasonably extensive wine list. Our meal of two mains, two drinks, and service, came to £45, which we thought was very reasonable in the circumstances. Recommended if in the area. There is a free car park at the rear of the property.

This has got to be one of the oldest pubs in South Wales, it's medieval and dates from 1380. This is one of those places that reminds you how small we used to be - I'm only 5ft 7 and I stoop through the worn wooden doors. I havn't eaten here, but there is also a well respected restaurant upstairs offering a good selection of seafood dishes. Dishes include: Brixham Crab Cake with baby leaves and lemon butter sauce (£5.25); Plaice Goujons with paprika and a sweet red pepper tartar sauce (£4.95); Roasted Fillet of Hake with a chorizo and roasted red pepper risotto ith tomato, garlic and orange sauce for £13.95 For the vegetarians on the day I visited there was: Tomato Fondue, Wild Mushroom and Aubergine Bake, finished with garlic crumb and poached egg (£4.95) and Rosemary and Truffle Arancini Risotto with a tomato, red onion and spring onion salsa ( £4.95). The restaurant opening times are Monday to Saturday from 7pm to 9.30pm. They also offer bar meals between 12 and 2 pm Mondays to Saturdays and evening meals Monday to Friday from 6 to 8 pm.

This was our splurge meal. It was also one of the best meals I had while in Wales…read more The food here is more about quality and less about quantity. If you are an American and reading this review, you will know what I'm talking about. We eat too much as a society. I'll admit it myself. I am used to getting and eating a lot of food. It is amazing I am not overweight. Anyway I went off on a tangent there. Sue and I read about this place in a travel book she had for Wales. We decided on the airplane that if we were going to have one really good meal while in Wales, it would be at the Walnut Tree. Not exactly around the corner from where we were staying in Barmouth, but we had plans to be down around this part of the country so it was a no brainer. We got here quite early on a weekday evening. The night was beautiful and we decided to secure a table outside. Before we left all of the tables were filled. Not sure if that was the case inside as well as the only time I was inside was when we initially walked in and asked if we could sit outside. Started out with a refreshing elderflower drink. We decided against alcoholic drinks as we were a distance away from our home base and had a long drive back to get there. The drink was the perfect drink for a warm summer night. After our drinks came, they also brought out a small fish cake to whet the whistle. A nice extra touch that was unexpected. Our food started out with a few appetizers. A Panzanella Salad along with monkfish with tomato, chilli and ginger. Good choices both on the starters. The monkfish (similar taste to lobster) was pretty damn amazing if I have to say so myself. I just did. For my main I had suckling pig, morcilla (blood sausage) and empanadilla. The suckling pig came bone in. It was fun getting every little piece of pig that I could get. Presentation was A+ and the quality was too. Nothing wrong with this meal at all. When it came time for dessert, our server (one of a few that took care of us on this night) asked if we had any room for "puddings". He pronounced it poo-dings. You have to love the Welsh accent. We did and made room for the orange and almond cake. A good palate cleanser. This was a 5 star meal if there ever was a 5 star meal. Again, you aren't going to get a ton of food here, but you will happily leave satisfied and you won't have a gut bomb to deal with. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The service is great and the cocktails are outstanding. The dessert menu is wonderful and the flavour is always there. The restaurant is pretty small but that's not a complaint, it does make the noise level high. The toilets are outside but again that's not a problem. The location is out of the way but always worth the journey.
