Caveat emptor:
This is a review of the burger these guys made at the SP BurgerFest, not of the restaurants themselves.
The skinny: Best damn burger I tried at BurgerFest (and I tried 3 or 4 and inspected all the menus and "kitchens" neurotically).
Why? These guys were the only ones who figured out that:
A) A good burger doesn't need silly gourmet toppings. I'm not saying a Bried and cognac-infused pear burger with onion frisee ISN'T a tasty -- I'm just saying it's unneccessary. These guys kept it simple and delicous.
B) The best burger is a burger cooked on the grill. Period.
Now, I do have to quip with the claim that it was a "smoked" burger (as they called it), because to me smoked means cooked slow over indirect heat bathed in smoke from aromatic hardwoods. But hey, why split hairs? No, I would call this a good all fashioned "Cookout-style" burger, and it's a shame more people aren't doing this in SP because there are some amazing burger joints. In fact, SP is more obsessed with burgers than ANYWHERE I have ever lived, including Texas and Chicago.
I will visit the restaurant soon, but I believe the "smoked" burger is only available at one of the two locations (Augusta?). So, if I were you, or you were me (which are both disturbing, no?), we would call ahead and find out which!
Happy burgering! read more
