Gracie Humaitá was BY FAR the friendliest and most accessible to beginners & women. They have free beginner classes twice/week (they even let you borrow gis!) so you can try out the sport with no commitment and learn the basics in a very safe environment (vs some other gyms where they put me into regular classes with very little instruction). The instructors are all incredibly nice and great teachers, and most of the beginner classes have other black or colored belts who walk around answering questions and helping you on the moves. Paulo, the head instructor, is also very friendly, inclusive, and promotes a great culture at the gym. After about a month doing beginners classes, I signed up for the membership, bought my own gi, and am thrilled to continue my BJJ journey! If it weren't for finding Gracie Humaitá, I likely would have quit after a couple classes at any of the other gyms I tried out. This gym, instruction, and community has been incredible, and I hope anyone who's on the fence gives them a try!

My complaints went unheard. I quit and over a year's time, several others quit too. They only removed him after he bit someone in sparring. Then he just went to the Humaita in Cedar Park, where I was attending the veteran training days because I'm a veteran with PTSD, but he would just show up to those classes too even though he wasn't a veteran. He would do it to harass me. So I quit going there too. Finally he was kicked out of there 6-12 months later. I cannot support a school that doesn't take harassment or threats of abuse from their members seriously. Creig is still in the community and he fights amateurs Muay Thai at local bars. I cannot recommend this school because of their behavior in this matter.

People walking around shirtless, dripping sweat, stinking, in bare feet, only socks, crocs, and Teva sandles. Nasty. Old dilapidated and low quality dumbbells, only 2 old treadmills and a few of the manual treadmills, no fixed weight barbells, a bathroom falling apart with the toilet bowl cover hanging on by one hinge. No air conditioning. Hot and smelly. Humid atmosphere. Couldn't draw up a worse gym in my imagination. To me it's 1 star but I guess to cross fit cultists this is what they like. Only a few smoothie choices and no chicken wraps or anything in their nutrition bar or whatever it's called. If you know how to work out and don't need or want a trainer or group then this place is definitely not for you. They do an incredible job on marketing and must edit photos or take superb angles like a catfish on tinder. Almost thinking they pay influencers to hype this place up. Either way I'd prefer the most basic Planet Fitness or Crunch 100x over this. In fact I'd rather get chubby and not work out over having to work out in an environment like this again.

One…read moreof the ladies training there (the amazing Lex) actually beat me at a jiu jitsu tournament. We hit it off while competing and became friends through that experience, which says a lot about the kind of supportive, women-forward culture that exists at The Void. When I shared that I was looking for a new school, she invited me to come try out. On my first day, Mars (the owner) gave me a full walkthrough of the facility. The school is located inside a larger facility that includes showers, a full workout gym, a sauna, and more. The fact that The Void members have access to all of these amenities honestly blew my mind. All of the perks, along with the schedule and membership details, are clearly laid out on their website. I also really appreciated that there is no contract and that pricing is very affordable, especially for downtown Austin. I tried MMA sparring, jiu jitsu, and kickboxing. Jiu jitsu is primarily no gi, but you can bring a gi if you want. Every coach I interacted with was knowledgeable, respectful, and patient. Any time I had concerns around safety or technique, they listened and offered modifications when needed. As a woman training in combat sports, this made me feel genuinely respected and well taken care of. On the MMA and kickboxing side, it's worth noting that they have heavy bags in house. The kickboxing classes (led by Christian) also had a strong women presence which I loved. There is no uniform requirement for any of the classes, so you have a lot of flexibility with what to wear. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing and bringing gloves and shin pads if it's your first time. They also have a in house videographer and photographer who captures amazing photos and videos. You can check out his work on Instagram at @donpablo.arw !! I live up north in the suburbs about 30 to 40 minutes away so if it were not for the distance, I would have signed up in a heartbeat. I made a lot of friends in the short time I spent at The Void, and that really speaks to the training environment and culture they have built. The location itself is great with plenty of parking. There is cold water available, a vending machine nearby, and very clean bathrooms. Mars was communicative, and since I tried out during a weird time with the holidays, I was especially grateful for their generosity in allowing me to train through the end of the month. The Void also hosts free community events, such as the upcoming Couple's Self Defense Date Night. All of their information can be found on their website or Instagram at @thevoidmartialarts. I highly recommend The Void to anyone interested in jiu jitsu or MMA in the downtown Austin area!

The instructors and owners are all welcoming, friendly, and likeable. The classes are well-structured and logical. How the teachers are taught to teach shows -- there is real effort in the environment they want to create / curate here. The trainers demonstrate clear expertise in every area. More importantly, though, the way the gym is run is the right way, in my opinion: it's VERY clean and sanitary and all the participants are trained to keep it that way. It's a don't-be-that-guy/gal kind of thing which everyone enforces, and this is a very good thing. Dirty gyms are not just gross but unsafe. This one is probably clean enough to do minor surgery in. But there are / have been vanishingly few injuries or accidents, that I know of. Safety first. The calendar / schedule is super consistent, and the billing is clear and transparent. Everything is right there on their website. The owners really don't hide the ball on anything - including why they do things the way they do them. It's not the cheapest gym in town, but it's worth it. You will love going enough that the cost will not matter. This is a safe environment - both physically and psychologically / interpersonally. There is a class for everyone, from the raw, non-athletic beginner interested in practical self-defense to the serious martial arts type. I wish I could go more often than I do. Highly recommend this one.

Their tiny tigers program definitely keeps my kindergartener's attention and their leadership program is great in helping tweens and teens develop leadership skills and confidence for adulthood. One of the things that sold me on this school was their Masters Club. This club offers all the benefits of traditional Songham Taekwondo but the fun part is the additional classes every Wednesday night. We learn other martial arts and street self defense including jiu jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, wrestling, grappling, and knife self defense. This class is affectionally called Wildcard Wednesdays because it could be anything! And it's all fun!! I have always been a fan of learning multiple disciplines but as you can imagine the cost of doing all of those at once can be tremendous. Mr Jason Shaefer brings it to us at a very reasonable price and makes it fun, fresh and entertaining. I truly recommend this place not only for anyone wanting to get back in shape but also if you have young ones that you want to keep active and engaged. It has a great family atmosphere and we all encourage and push each other to be better. I don't know many other places that offer this kind of environment, let alone with the ability to do this with family. My wife and three kids as well as brother, sister in law, niece and nephew are all taking classes here. It truly is a great place!

In the very first class, Mr. Elizondo, a recommended blackbelt at the time, went out of his way to work with her and make sure that she understood the moves and was doing them they correct way. A few months later, our youngest daughter joined the Tiny Tigers program and has loved it. Ms. Lallier is a great teacher and has loads of patience with the little ones. She always has enough helpers to make sure that each student gets the attention that they deserve. Jump ahead another few months and now both myself and my wife have joined up. To say that South Austin ATA is a true family friendly environment is an understatement. The vast majority of the 50 - 60 students are part of a family. All and all it's a good group and the instructors truly care about their students. The biggest advantage I can see to South Austin ATA is that the owners are the instructors. They have a vested interest in making sure that the curriculum is administered correctly and they students are having fun! Highly recommend checking them out.
