The hotel is under a different name with different ownership, and with a theater theme (since the…read moretheater is next door). It's now called Theaterhotel Wien.
I wanted to love this place; I really did. The theater theme seemed cute, the limited interactions I had with staff were friendly, though fairly useless at times. The building seemed pretty classical and I liked the decor. From my room, I had a nice view of the inside the building. The location is quite good: near a residential area, city hall, museums, and U-bahn.
I'll start with the gripes I had that were not specific to my stay:
1. "Luggage storage" consists of the bottom of a stairwell. There's no locked room or any semblance of security. It's not within sight of the concierge desk. Anyone could just take your suitcase and no one would notice.
2. Speaking of concierge, unlike some sources state on the internet, the concierge is not operating 24-hours regularly. Some days are 24-hours, some days are not. There is a keycard reader at the entrance if locked.
3. Like most older buildings in Europe, if there is an elevator, there's only one. I expected it, though.
4. Breakfast buffet is not included (don't be fooled) and I didn't go for it. 35-40 Euros? Really?
5. While the bathroom was clean, the shower took way too long to get warm. I know it seems like a first-world issue, but taking 5+ minutes to warm the water is a waste of water.
6. The TV has a gazillion channels but most are locked, and getting around those channels can be cumbersome.
7. The fridge/mini-bar was pretty useless, with the temperature not too far from room temp.
8. The closet without doors looked really old (paint job tried to make it look new).
So here's what happened:
My second night, I spotted what looked to be a rather large bedbug in my room. Okay, I'm not an insect expert but I've seen bedbugs before. I usually take precautions while traveling by keeping clothes above or keeping it in the suitcase, which I did here.
I immediately packed up and went to the concierge to ask for another room. He said the hotel was completely booked. He was nice enough to look around alternative hotels nearby but couldn't really find anything. I ended up booking another hotel and leaving immediately at midnight. He had offered to "kill" the insect but, realistically, I wouldn't be able to sleep well the rest of the stay.
Someone from the hotel called me after I came back from vacation. I emailed a response back but have not heard anything. My credit card seemingly did not charge me for one night (or part of one night?) but I think I still got stiffed considering the concerning matter.
You have options around there. It's best to find another one.
