I used to frequent Shine's Fresh Asian before Tunami swept in (pun intended).
I'll miss Shine's (omg the noodle soup! and rougamo, tearrr), but I have to admit this new spot had me curious. The name made me chuckle (Tunami?) and gave me flashbacks to Toonami from my Cartoon Network anime-watching days (where my otakus and weaboos at??).
Walking in, they've added a bar, but the rest of the space still feels casual. TVs in the bar showing World Cup games definitely attracted locals. When I mentioned I was there for sushi, the owner (I think that's him) enthusiastically tried to sell me on orange chicken. Definitely not my vibe. I realized that he was Cantonese but probably wasn't sure if I was Cantonese. (Spoiler alert: I am; 2nd generation representtttt!) I politely redirected back to sushi and landed on a sushi combo.
Surprise, the sushi was fresh and honestly tastier than I expected for the casual vibe. It was a step up from Kura Revolving Sushi in Watertown Arsenal Yards. They brought out wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce, and for around thirty dollars I left happy. As I headed out, the owner eagerly suggested I try the omakase next time. I laughed and said sure, maybe if I'm celebrating something big like a promotion: until then, I'm happy sticking to the sushi.
Tunami has definitely earned its place in my rotation and I'll be curious to see in the long run how it stacks up against Hanami. For now, Belmont's locals seem to love watching their soccer games here and I'll be back to see how it all holds up over time, but I'm hopeful. read more
