Today @amyreneewelch and I discovered a taste of heaven in Margate, FL.
@thegemeatery is a place of taste bud happiness. Like many places in South Florida, the culinary delight resides in an unassuming strip mall.
We ordered large for flavor and calories. We started with a white chocolate and raspberry biscuit. Lori snagged one fresh from Tony's baking pan. Lori and Tony own and operate the place. They are as pleasant as the food. The biscuit started what would be a circus of food flavor. It was everything a biscuit should be, buttery, flaky, fluffy, and unique. The white chocolate, raspberry jam, and icing took it to a place of creative perfection. It was a top 3 biscuit experience.
Next we had the full serving of biscuits and gravy. This was the point I thought, "Tony has to be from Southern Louisiana". There is a distinct spice and flavor of the gravy in those parts. It takes gravy and kicks it up a notch. Surprisingly Tony is from New York. But, the man's gravy is from Southern Louisiana. The portion was enough to feed a High School Basketball Starting 5!!!
Following that we should have entered a food comma but Lori didn't cut us off. Instead, she brought perfectly cooked fried eggs over medium, sausage, and a short stack of pancakes. This all had the feel of classic dinner food made with love.
We finished off the morning with one of their cinnamon rolls.
This was a crowd pleaser and show stopper. Tony uses salted caramel to balance the icing. The salted caramel creates a charred sensation in the best possible way. It was like a hint of caramelized sugar on crème brûlée. It was the best cinnamon roll I have tasted in my life.
Tony stopped by our table twice. It was evident the joy he gets from cooking for people. Lori was conversational and it was obvious her administration for Tony's skill in the kitchen.
I would describe the food as creative classics made with people who love food in mind.
The food is so good I would recommend driving up to two hours to eat it.
Afterwards Amy and I headed to the Everglades and walked a few miles and spotted a few Florida Gators. read more
