I love so much about Springbone, conceptually: The interior is sleek, minimalistic, and calming, with plenty of light coming in through the wall of windows. Tables are charmingly (and sustainably) decorated with dried flowers. The food is "clean" with well sourced ingredients and a legitimate number of vegetarian options. There's broth on the menu, a food group I adore. I like that they provide water and reusable glasses for water, for those dining in. I like that the bowls are compostable and the lids recylable (though it would be even more awesome if they used reusable bowls and utensils a la Panera).
Alas, the food just doesn't do it for me.
We've tried a good portion of the menu over the course of numerous visits. The broths are... okay. We make far better broth at home. The salads and bowls are fair, with good, fresh components like kale, tahini, radish and other vegetable matter. Proteins like chicken, salmon, and beef are consistently dry and hard, however. I love that the chicken is free range and the beef is grass fed, etc. -- but frankly, chains like Panera make more delicious bowls / salads.
We've only tried one smoothie so far, the Golden Milk (banana, liquid gold, ginger, cinnamon, grass-fed whole milk). We like all the ingredients individually and make variations of the drink at home. But for some reason Springbone's version tastes very unpleasant. (Is it the use of underripe bananas? The astringency of turmeric untempered by heat?) It sits like a brick in the stomach.
The staff is very nice. I'm sure we'll be back given its convenient location. Maybe one of these days I'll stumble across something delicious on the menu. I'm open to suggestions! read more
