Although Ocean Acres advertises that it is only a short walk to Footbridge Beach, it is actually quite a long walk, especially for those with back problems. STRIKE ONE! We found that our room was missing basic amenities. We had a tiny coffee maker, but we were missing creamer and had to go to the office to get some. The second day, we were again missing creamer. This time, the manager dropped some by our room after we called. You'd think after the first time they would have made sure that we had creamer. Note: I saw many guests coming back with Dunkin' Donuts coffee (Route 1N in Wells). Also missing was a plastic bathroom cup, lotion, toothpaste, tissues---all std. items at most hotels/motels. We did have a tiny bottle of Breck shampoo/conditioner (do they still made these crappy hair products?). STRIKE TWO! Our mattresses were soft and saggy, making for virtually sleepless nights. STRIKE THREE! Although our room seemed clean, the décor was in need of an update. On the second day of our stay, we encountered three very large ants in the bathroom and in the main room. A lampshade above the nightstand had a significant burn hole in it. Whether it from the heat of the bulb or from a cigar or cigarette (no smoking allowed here), I could' tell, but you'd think they would have the sense to repair/replace it. STRIKE FOUR! We had brought cold drinks, but when we went to put them into the small fridge, we found that it had not been plugged in and the interior of it was warm. I also found that the thermostat knob was broken and hard to turn to "colder," as were the knobs on the A/C unit (perhaps intentionally to keep utilities bills down). As we placed our bottles in the fridge, they kept falling through the widely-spaced metal grids of the shelf. The fridge was also very noisy, and I unplugged it on the second night in order to get some sleep. STRIKE FIVE! We brought bottled water from home and bought wine coolers and beer at the Hannaford's in Wells. After returning from an afternoon in the Cove, we found that the maid decided to help herself to 4 wine cooler empties that we placed in the original cardboard carton on the shelf above the refrigerator---we clearly did not throw them away in the wastebasket for disposal. We planned to return all the empties in these crates for deposit refunds. Now the remaining bottles were hard to package for return. No big deal, but that was pretty ballsy of her. STRIKE SIX! We had a small TV which was much too small for the room. We had to pull it forward on the dresser to make it visible from our beds. The audio was screwed up and made an odd buzzing sound. There was a laminated card listing the cable channels available. The problem was that we got only half of them, but at least got NESN for the SOX games. The ice machine and beverage vending machine are in the lot outside, next to the indoor pool house. If there's inclement weather, you're S.O.L.! STRIKE EIGHT! The indoor pool was barely heated and extremely small for the amount of guests. The building it's housed in is stark, having only a cheap plastic chairs, no loungers or tables, and was decorated with a couple of plastic plants, a life-saving ring and a pole with a loop (a joke considering that the pool is only 5 feet deep). A sign warns that no food or beverages are allowed. Another sign warns guests that there is video surveillance and audio monitoring (Oh no! We were sure to whisper so mgt. couldn't overhear us). When poolside, we like to relax with a few games of cribbage or backgammon in between dips---not the case here. It was as if they wanted to make this area uninviting, hastening guests to get the heck out--- pronto! Talk about being inhospitable! This pool was hardly used by other guests, although we did take short dips each afternoon before dinner. I observed a locked door in this building. Logically, to house the pool's pump, etc., but perhaps also used to stash empty bottles and cans---all compliments of their guests. STRIKE NINE! All in all, we enjoyed our time in Ogunquit, mainly our visits to Perkins Cove, restaurants, shops and the lobster boat tour we took. We have been to Ogunquit many times before, but never have we stayed at such a shoddy facility. I guess we're just used to much better accommodations and weren't able to make the transition from 4/5 star hotels/motels to this one (2 stars at best, and I'm being generous). We usually stay at Juniper Hills (they were booked) or Anchorage by the Sea (prices have skyrocketed). We should have booked at a higher caliber establishment. Please don't cheap out---you'll regret it! read more
