I didn't have high expectations for this restaurant but sadly even those weren't met.
The restaurant is only open at night on Saturdays (open for lunch on other days).
You have to enter through a tabac (newsagent) through a little door saying toilet. So far, so Shoreditch (completely unintentional - this is a tiny village in the french countryside). The decor and ambience is very bland, though there was an open fire.
Ok so the good:
Service is fast
It's pretty good value (around 35 euro for 3 courses)
The jumbo prawns were excellent - sweet and tender
Scallops were also good and very generous portions
Now the bad:
I ordered the salad with camembert to start. This arrived absolutely drenched in bacon bits and cured meat. I don't eat meat. It never mentions any meat on the menu. Typical rural france i guess. This was annoying though as i had to swap with my fiance to have his scallops in cream sauce. Very tasty but really rich and i wanted something fresh. He said the salad was good though.
I shared mains with my mother. As i said earlier the grilled prawns were excellent. The cod however was terrible. Tasted like it had been frozen with a horrid mushy texture. May just have been overcooked.
For dessert my chocolate tart was grainy and mushy.
Service was rather perfunctory with no apology when we explained we don't eat meat.
So the 3 stars is because some elements were great but some terrible. read more
