This is a well -preserved example of an old way of life but it is open very limited hours during the summer. Just my luck to arrive at the wrong time, that is, before it opens for the season. I would have been there on the wrong day, anyway, since it's only open on Saturdays, and then with very limited hours. So it is with many museums that are run by, and staffed by, volunteers.
A few housekeeping items for your consideration. First of all, Gresham is an out-of-the-way place, about 13 miles northwest of Shawano and is reached on county highways. It is part of my family history, many of my ancestors settled originally in this area. One great grandfather tried to farm near here and finally gave it up, saying, "The only thing you can grow here is rocks." If you pay attention, you'll find many rock walls built with stones pulled from farm fields. To give you an idea of its location, Gresham is in an area of Shawano County that is in very close proximity to the Menominee Reservation and County.
This depot opened in 1907 on the Wisconsin & Northern Railway and it became part of the Soo Line in 1921. Mail and freight arrived in Gresham via the railroad until 1963 when the depot was closed. The local women's club acquired the depot in 1974 and moved it down the hill to its present location.
Apparently, much of the depot appears as it always did but I haven't been there to see it - yet.
It's a place to see if you're a rail fan, and not far off the beaten path. If you're coming from Shawano, Highway A cuts west from WI 47 and will return you to northbound 47, too. read more
