A Yelp business listing already exists for FASA, so I'll review it.
Based in Chicago, FASA is known for publishing pen-and-paper role-playing games, tabletop miniatures, wargames, board games, and books. They've been around since 1980. I know them best for creating the Shadowrun franchise which I fell in love with in the early 90s from the Super NES version of the game.
Shadowrun was released for the Super NES in May 1993 and it's a true gem. The Super NES has a lot of hidden gems and if I were to make a list of my favorites, Shadowrun would probably be at the top. The game was developed by Beam Software and published by Data East, with property under license from FASA.
What drew me into Shadowrun is its mysterious and intriguing cyberpunk-fantasy world. The combination of ominous visuals and music immediately sucked me in. The graphic style and gameplay mechanics were unique at the time. The fact that you start the game off laying on your deathbed inside a morgue added to the mystery and intrigue. Who are you? Why did someone try to murder you? I was only 11 when the game came out. It was definitely designed for a more mature audience. The world was dark and dystopian. The action was a mix of both gun violence and magic. I hadn't seen anything like it before.
The gameplay style is action RPG with an isometric perspective. The game is fairly challenging and I couldn't beat it in the 90s. I later beat it as an adult using an emulator and GameFAQs. The bleak, unpleasant, and oftentimes creepy setting and mood are things that still stick with me to this day. Marshall Parker, who composed the score, did a masterful job. I love the soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq9-xrkGXQk
I haven't had the chance to play other games in the franchise, but would like to if only I had the time.
If you appreciate retro video games and haven't played Shadowrun for the Super NES, I highly recommend it. If you grew up with the Super NES and never played Shadowrun, you missed out. read more
