There was so much hype with the reopening of Bar Ferdinando, but I found it quite lackluster. While I never been when Frank owned the place, I know many others who grew up coming here who felt it changed too much for their taste. Why is the Manhattan Special called Brooklyn Special? (which you can also get on tap at House of Pizza now) But the space does have an elevated old school charm as with all of Sal's other restaurants.
My first visit, they were too busy and wouldn't take a name down for a waitlist. On my second visit, we realized they didn't serve entrees as we were starving. Finally, the husband and I made our way back to try it out on a random Tuesday. The tables are small as this spot is moreso for a cocktail and a snack. I had the Limoncello Spritz ($16) as I absolutely fell in love with this cocktail in Italy this past summer, although it leans more on the cucumber flavor than lemon here. It's still a nice and refreshing cocktail though.
For food, we ordered the Potato Croquettes ($9), Hot Sopressata & Sharp Provolone ($12), and the Pane E Panelle ($12). Croquettes was cheesy and crispy and the panelle was something unique, which was more filling. I thought the hot sopressata was so basic and overpriced. I wish it was at least served on the tiered tray that I've seen in other photos too. Overall, nothing had me wanting to return and we spent over $80 for a cocktail and some snacks that still left us pretty hungry.
I'm not sure what others are seeing. Maybe it's the nostalgia, maybe it's the social media popularity; but I'll hop over to Cafe Spaghetti instead. read more
