WHERES THE TASTE ?
Ava Thomas pizzeria is nesteled within a street of many bars and eateries. Sadly, no pizza joints in Europe serve slices, and i'm not sure why. We wanted to try this place and it was very close to our hotel in Nieuwezijds. The sign out front said "Italian Cuisine since 1994", so how could I go wrong?
The restaurant had cool European pictures as decor even sporting an oversized Mona Lisa with two separate rooms of thick wooden tables. The server was professional and pleasant and explained some of the pizza options. Ordered a cheese pizza with purple onions for "take away", which is the American version of "togo". They offer several pizza creations for under 15€ but only one size. The pizza was ready in ten minutes and was piping hot. We took a table in front of the restaurant and excitedly opened the box and saw a nice looking thin crust hand tossed pizza and took my first bite. To my dismay, it was completely bland and the dough was soft.
Maybe this is what pizza is supposed to taste like in Amsterdam? I added red pepper flakes which only made it taste like red pepper flakes. My wife and I finished the pizza but were severely disappointed. Thankfully, the smash burger and fries we ate just prior to the pizza were wonderfully tasty. Now off to find dessert and hopefully a better experience. read more
