The Short Version: Restaurant specializing in Katsu. Had the chicken Katsu and it was so crispy and delicious. The Long Version: Tokyo Crispy opened up in the Fall of 2025 in the space that used to be Karara. When they first opened they had lineups out the door. I hate lineups and I hate crowds, so I waited for the hype to die down a bit. But now having eaten there, I feel the hype was real. Their chicken Katsu was the crispiest I've ever had. The inside was moist and juicy and the breading was light and crispy. I took my mom to Tokyo Crispy in March 2026 for an early dinner after a matinee at Meridian Theatre nearby. We arrived at 5pm just as they were opening, so had the restaurant all to ourselves for a little bit. We were offered complimentary roasted corn tea or water and we opted for the tea. The tea was tasty with a potent roasted corn flavour. We both got the Tokyo Chicken Katsu meal ($20.45 each). I asked for all sauces on the side. And it arrived as requested. The meal comes with shredded cabbage with a rich vinaigrette, pickled radishes, steamed rice and miso soup, in addition to the Katsu. The meat was a chicken thigh, so it was moist, juicy and flavourful. The breading was light and crispy. They make their own breadcrumbs for the Katsu, using freshly baked-in-house bread. The shredded cabbage was finely shredded which I really liked. The vinaigrette complemented the cabbage well. I think when they first opened, they served the Katsu on top of the cabbage which made it greasy, but during our visit, the Katsu was on a metal rack and the cabbage was to the side, which I feel is a much better plating style. The miso soup had good flavour but it was just broth with some green onions. No tofu and no seaweed/wakame. Pickled radishes were mildly pickled and were nice and crunchy. The steamed rice was good with a slightly sticky texture which I found pleasant. Service was lovely. Our server was welcoming and friendly. She was attentive without being intrusive and even offered to refill our tea pot, which we gladly accepted. The space inside is small. Decor is minimal and ambiance is casual. The restaurant is in a plaza so there free parking in the plaza parking lot. The restaurant is tucked away in a corner so a bit hard to see from the street.
