We were tired of walking and randomly stumbled upon this restaurant that's sort of hidden in a…read morebuilding with little foot traffic. The decor is quite shabby and the walls are cluttered with reviews, magazine covers, and newspaper clippings with headlines ranging from "top voted Malaysian restaurant" to which celebrity has visited and endorsed its legitimacy. It was also a full house on a week night. So without further ado, we asked for a table for four. The wait was extremely short and we quickly realized why. Their efficiency is marked by the delivery of food which typically occurred within minutes of ordering. Coming from the Midwest, I would say these portions are relatively petite. It worked in our favor because we typically prefer to order a variety and would rather not have leftovers since we're tourists. We shared the satay platter, Singaporean curry noodles with shrimp and egg, char kway teow with shrimp, Hainan chicken, and tung choy. Everything was good but the noodles and chicken stood out the most. The Hainan chicken is deboned and goes perfectly well with the rice which is prepared with the chicken stock and fat that was generated from cooking the chicken. The Singaporean curry noodles are different from the ones I usually have. This one is wetter and the curry flavor is more subtle. If you can handle more heat, then the char kway teow is for you. It's wide noodles stir fried over high heat with a soy sauce and chili base. That was my favorite dish of the night. The next time I come back, I'd give that chai tau kway a try!

That dish along is worthy of another trip to TST alone. Ironically, we didn't think that the satay was particularly good (least favorite of our 3 dishes). I probably would try the Fried Kway Teow next time instead of ordering the Sambal Beehoon Goreng (noodles) again. And would definitely try the Chicken Rice, especially after seeing the recommendation on CNNGo travel site.... Next time

It was always told to me that Nam Ah (South Asia) was the standard when it came to…read moreIndo-Malay-Singaporean cuisine in Kowloon. It makes sense after all, Nam Ah has practically outlived most of the businesses on Ashley through 50+ years and might have the roomiest interior, along with the nicest decor of the bunch. But after a couple of recent visits, it occurred to me the flavors were decent at best, not enough to warrant an immediate return. That's not to say things at Nam Ah were bad per se, but it hasn't won over my group of dining companions and I for the times we've gone. The menu is understandably catered to the Hong Kong and western palate, which includes random dishes from Portuguese Chicken to Borscht. The staff was sadly not in tune with a lot of Southeast Asian choices (such as roti canai, mee goreng, etc.) because they actually don't exist on the menu. Thankfully, through a myriad of random choices, we were able to convince them to create something similar to it. The end result showed it wasn't their strong suit, so it's hard to fault them for that. So instead, we focused on things they were known for. Hainanese Chicken ($85 for a quarter, $138 for a half), Pork Satay ($70), Char Kwayteow Noodles ($75) and a bowl of their Seafood Laksa. The reactions all around were shoulder shrugs, but being that we were hungry enough we still ate most of everything for the benefit of the doubt. I've had better Hainan Chicken at smaller, less distinguished places, but at least the presentation was on point. I would like to think Nam Ah has had better days or perhaps the times have changed in a way where this cuisine has become more accessible than ever. While I'm not opposed to a return visit, I'm really hoping they'll revamp their selections to where not only all of SE Asia is represented in some way, but tastes like it too.
