Central Market is one of two existing Bauhaus market buildings in Hong Kong. Beside the market was the first public female restroom in Hong Kong. At one point, Central Market was the largest meat market in Asia. The building was renovated and most recently reopened in 2021. So nice to explore the stalls and sweet treats that are available to buy. Make sure to have yen as not all of the vendors accept credit cards. Love the anime characters. Try the roasted goose. Small, but well loved neighborhood temple with unique coiled incense hanging and wafting through…read morethe air. There's a small public outside courtyard, smaller inner courtyard with incense shop and reception, and three different altars. Two other people were doing devotion while I was there, a lady was washing the floor, and a man was attending the reception/shop. I almost missed it because the pedestrian street has so many things that could easily distract you and make you miss it if you aren't looking for the simple white arch along the alley.

But I believe with three "Man Mo" temples around Hong Kong and the SAR, this one is a worthy stop if you find yourself in the area. Because it is in Tai Po, it is void of tourists and quaint. It feels very local and peaceful. It was built in 1891 and was declared a historical monument in 1984. More so than other temples I have seen, this place is very well taken care of. The small courtyard was so exceptionally clean and manicured. The temple is also small and dedicated to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo). We were the only two people there, other than the one man who was attending the temple reception desk. This temple is located about mid way down Fu Shin Street, which is a small market street for shopping (less tourist trinkets and more designed for locals) and also around the corner from the Railroad Museum.

I called and made my appointment after work on a weekday as my office was actually quite close to the shop. The directions they provide on the Facebook page are very good and I found their shop without much problem. Their shop is very small (it's a mom and pop) and catered mainly to locals. Their clientele is very diverse and I heard so many mind-blowing conversations during my visit If you have done face-threading before, you will know that it's an art that's easy to learn and difficult to master. I have to say the daughter does an excellent job! She is very experienced and professional. (Note: you will still experience some tingling sensation but that't quite normal.). If i had any doubt when I first arrived, it's completely gone by now. I would recommend this place to anyone who wanted to try face threading and doesn't mind if the shop is not designed like a fancy SPA.

I like the architecture in this building…read more While I haven't been inside yet - it was all barricaded up the last time I was around there during Occupy Central in Oct/Nov '14, this place is often the site of many protests even before Occupy Central (should have been called Occupy Admiralty though) in 2014. While theres an occupy rally happening, this would have been a good place for cheap accommodation (BYO tent!) in Hong Kong (probably a lot safer than Chunking Mansions)

But it's not for everyone.

My expectation was kind of a 3 going in, but definitely a solid 4 coming out. What makes this place a 4 on Yelp? 1) Although most likely only for a limited time, they have a special exhibition of "3D Human Body." Totally kid friendly and educational. Mostly all things in print on the walls (pictures and words), but interesting none the less. The exhibition ends with a small area that showcases the SARS outbreak of 2003 and how it was identified and eradicated. Kind of interesting as an outsider who was aware when this happened, but knew the global reach this had. 2) Dating back to 1906 as the Government Bacteriological Institute, how great to see an old building that has not been knocked down to build a residential complex. 3) Plague, SARS, bacterias, infectious diseases, epidemics, sanitation issues,...kind of gross, but also like a car wreck...you don't want to look, but you have to! The history or these kinds of outbreaks here in Hong Kong (actually right in this neighborhood!) over the last 100+ years is outlined and showcased here at this facility, where they once were focusing on research, public health improvements, medical advances, etc. 4) Zhang Yanzi is an artist who is from mainland China (represented by Ora-Ora gallery) who was on special display during my visit. Very cool, merging art and medicine, really great contemporary art that is a good fit on topic and size for the space of the museum. Kind of neat to have the old and the new of this museum merged under the same roof. 5) From the top floor to the basement, they have loads of old school medical equipment on display. From an operation table from 100 years ago to the original lab table they used, it is kind of cool that all this stuff was preserved. 6) This is not your average museum. It is small compared to many and definitely a unique topic, but really kind of cool. There are only around 30 medical museums on the planet. How cool that there is one right here in HK! For $20HKD per adult, you will learn something new. I did not expect to find this all so interesting, but I did.

There are other fishes and insects from nature to look at as well. In the butterfly garden, a speaker will explain to you the life of a butterfly and the features of them. But it is in Cantonese only. Must bring Hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent! srsly I got bitten even with mosquito repellent on.

Hong Kong Wetland Park in Tin Shui Wai was probably one of our highlights: the park being a huge open area with ecodiversity that few Hong Kongers ever get to truly appreciate. If I hadn't worked in Yuen Long, I'm not sure I would've ever heard of the Wetland Park, which would have been a shame since the project site has been designed so well, architecturally and educationally. There's a butterfly garden, and a few trails that pass by mangroves, fishponds and streams - all seemingly miles away from the urban Hong Kong hustle and bustle. So, strap on your fanny packs, rock your sun visors, and dip in a bath of sun screen, because the Wetland Park is a day-trip of eco-friendly fun. Down with the 18 degree aircons! Well, down with the 18 degree aircons for a little bit: there's an indoor exhibition area, the Visitor Centre, where you can learn about animals that live in the wetlands - including Pui Pui the crocodile, who has a home at the Wetland Reserve. The viewing gallery also gives you a good view of the Wetland Reserve too from an indoor site. Admission is $30 for a standard ticket, while concessionary tickets are half price. The Park is a great place to take the kids, to get some fresh air, or to learn more about conservation in Hong Kong.
