Food Angel is a food rescue and food assistance program launched in 2011 by Bo Charity Foundation with the mission of "WASTE NOT, HUNGER NOT." The program rescues edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious hot meals in our central kitchen and be redistributed to serve the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong.
As a volunteer, the chance to help was super easy. They have three food kitchen locations around Hong Kong that can utilize volunteers. I chose the one in Chai Wan. They have two shifts (AM or PM) every day Monday through Friday. You go on their website, register your info, show up and BOOM!...you have pitched in and helped out a worthy cause.
I was not part of a group, I simply signed up as an individual. I showed up at 9:30AM and was done by 11:15AM or so. I was at the end of a assembly line of people filling plastic recyclable containers with food off a hot food line. My job was simply to place the lid on each container firmly snap in place and hand off the the staff packing it in a large bin. Things moved fast. I was supplied plastic gloves, a hair net, an apron and verbally conveyed safety protocols. The kitchen is clean, organized and efficient. We assembled about a thousand boxes meals during my shift. There were lots of staff and volunteers there working together.
I took the MTR to this location and then walked the 15-20 minutes to the building. It was not difficult to find, but it is a 15-20 minute walk from the MTR stop.
I had a great volunteer experience. I was impressed by the kitchen operation. I will volunteer at Food Angel again.
