Artland seems to focus more on supplies for painters or drawing artists. I noticed a good supply of paints, water colours, markers, and coloured pencils. If you're into Crayola products, they have a decent selection. You can find things like embroidery wool, but the cross stitch patterns they offer are limited to subjects like floral bouquets and landscapes. Same with clothing; you could find a few things like fabric paints or markers for t-shirts, but it's not that plentiful. They did have a sizeable section dedicated to art books, though. In the end, I got what I needed- coloured pencils to fuel my new short-term hobby before my baby arrives: adult colouring books! :)

There's really a lot of different types of products, however, the brand selection is rather limited. A lot of Staedtler, Primarily Daler-Rowney, I guess that's how Hong Kong art stores are? There's various high end products for professional artists too. One thing I didn't like about the store was I also found some products to be a bit scattered. Like they had a calligraphy section by the counter but also at another aisle, and Chinese calligraphy in another aisle. Many products like paints were organised by brands rather than by type. Yet many products were organised by products too. I also found the store to be slightly overpriced. The Pilot Parallel pen was $95 and it is only at $85 the Commercial Press in CWB, and $80 in CN. OH well. Their student level water colour is also quite expensive, Daler-Rowney Aquafine at $455. I can practically buy the artist colours at that price (On amazon at least) Paper and sketchbooks were nearly all Daler-Rowney as well. I just wished there's more variety in brands. However, this place is probably the best on Hong Kong Island and it will do the job if you need anything for your art supplies/project, etc. They also opened a mini gallery of a photographer's work. Also the hours aren't very friendly. Closed on Sundays, closed 5pm on Saturdays and 7pm on weekdays. They have struck a pleasant balance of a well stocked store, with plenty of products to browse, but enough space in the aisles to turn around without taking out half the shop. As is expected, Sam and Company sell pens, notebooks, printer paper, craft supplies, card board, red packets, greeting cards, as well as some rather random items like inflatable Hello Kittys, paper lanterns, plastic fruit and footballs. In fact, so good is the stock in there, that when I was recently looking for a non-self inking customisable 6 digit number stamp - yep, that specific, and had already flustered most as though I had asked for a left handed mug, the lovely owner/sales lady didn't bat an eyelid and just asked what size. I kid you not, she had an entire box of non-self inking customisable 6 digit number stamps. The point to the story is that Sam and Company have a lot of stuff. It's on shelves, piled on the floor, hanging off the ceilings, nine out of ten they will have what you are looking for (unless it is the aforementioned left handed mug). If you don't see what you want, ask the staff, there is so much more stuff secreted away behind the counter or out back. My only grumble is the staff can be a bit pushy. If the product you want isn't quite right, they get a bit shirty if you don't to buy. They also follow you around the store, but maybe that's just me and my dodgy looks? Not a lot of places sells these expensive marker pens (well, to a poor student, at least), let alone one that allows you to order the the spray-paint mount that turns each Copic marker into an Air Brush, how novel (back then again)! From this story, you get the idea, Arts Supplies is the one that you can find more 'exotic' type of unconventional art wares. Most of the times when I can't find the stuff at other shops (well, I look at other shops first usually 'cos it isn't exactly the cheapest around town), or when I needed something that is going to be phased out soon - and hence the need to stock up your favourite weapon- you know how frustrating that is. I often can find all those here, probable because it stocks up quite a bit itself too! Physically, the shop itself is so cramped that you can hardly move when there are more than a few customers inside. So this isn't the place you want to just hang around and browse through stuff leisurely. It's a grab and go shop for sure. The best bet is to know what you want exactly, the preferred brand and ask the shop keeper. They have amazing memory and can locate the stuff you look for within a minute or two, without the need to check the computer for stocks. Sometimes they can also tell you outright that a product is discontinued and recommend a close alternative to your choice, excellent service I'd say~~

There are many stationery stores around Hong Kong because, let's face it, they are an essential part of our lives. But not all stationery stores sell every bit of stationery, so I've come to realize. Some sell paper but no ink, others sell everything except envelops. It's a real source of frustration. Reliance Stationery Centre's name tells you that whatever you need you can rely on finding it here. That is to say, everything that I've needed I've found here, anyway. The bottom floor is big in its own right but there's even an upstairs to is as well with even more stationery. I walked in looking for stickers, which I found within 3 minutes, and I walked out with a whole bag of other stuff. A couple pens (why not?), a world map - something I've been looking for for quite some time, and a business card holder. I did not check if they provided printing services, if I had noticed that it would easily be given a five star rating. It's also in a very accessible location between central and Sheung Wan, closer to Sheung Wan, so picking up something between lunch breaks is an option. The morale of the story is that the next time you are fretting because you're missing a pen, printer cartridge, stamp collection folder, world map or some such you now know where you're most likely to find it.

After extensive browsing in this Moon Street shop, I took home a blue tote with a white feather print that folds up nicely for my travels. After much internal debate, I didn't buy a backpack I liked a lot (but have considered going back for it on my next visit to Hong Kong). Shopping in Wan Chai's Starstreet Precinct (comprised of Sun, Moon and Star Streets) should be on your list if you love eclectic retail experiences and feeling like you've stumbled upon places no one else knows about. Cocktail JoJo's cat loving owner has a keen eye, which you should take advantage of as you look at the many unique wares he's sourced and sells here.

It was from one of these recent articles that I read about Cocktail JoJo. Although I do not know how long the sale will be going on, for I think they are simply trying to move merchandise and rotate stock, but right now the entire store is 50% off! I am certain this is a limited time, but I wanted to spread the word. We arrived to this darling gem of a neighborhood and easily found Cocktail Jojo, nestled amongst little food cafes and art galleries. From the warm wooden white washed exterior to the cottage feel of the inside, everything about this place says cute. They have a big selection of coffee table style books, pillows, gift ideas, seasonal items, some shoes and clothes, table linens, dishes, etc. Various gift and home accessories. Tim was working when we arrived yesterday and he was young, friendly, outspoken and wanted to assist. I walked out with a great Tachen coffee table book about advertising campaigns and marketing of the 1950's in the US, a killer Michael Jackson 5 CD box set and a darling little sushi necklace. This place is all that is great about "small business" and exactly why Hong Kongers needs to support more small business in their neighborhoods.

Log-On is a great store to kill time in. Currently there are 13 LOG-ON stores in Hong Kong and this location is conveniently located inside the iSquare building in Tsim Sha Tsui. The store is clean and organized and there are plenty of employees around but do not pressure you to buy. I came into the store to just browse, but walked out with some beauty products that I think are slightly cheaper than what you might find at Sasa. It's a great store to find small gift items and greeting cards, they even offer snacks and drinks from around the world.

Also, be aware that not all Log-On stores are the same. Like any chain store, some have more loot than others. We went to one and thought it couldn't get any better, then went to another one and were even more wowed. This location was WOW number one. Aside from having things like pens, backpacks, phone cases and cameras, it also has somewhat of a drug store. They even have supplies for work/lunches for adults and children. My friend likened it to a smaller, cuter, better Target. Just GO!
