Living in a crowded city like HK, it is inevitable that you will fall ill at some point, either…read morefrom some reprobate coughing right in your face, or over doing int in LKF. Well, help is at hand. UMP Healthcare Group is a large medical services group in HK. Part of their group offers outpatient medical services, or to the lay person, a local GP doctors service. There are a lot of these local surgeries across Hong Kong, so you should be able to find a location convenient to you. The medical centre at Wan Chai is particularly good, primarily due to the excellent service from Dr. Yiu. Whilst this is quite a "local" feeling practice, Dr. Yiu's and his staff's English is perfect, so don't feel intimidated to come here as an ex-pat. I always find it very easy to get an appointment here within a couple of hours of calling, and once at the surgery, the wait to see the doctor is usually short. The consultations are thorough, so you can be confident that you are getting the best care. The services they offer include; general and specialist consultation, health checks, some minor outpatient procedures, inoculations, and travel health advice. On site, they also have x-ray facilities, and a dispensing pharmacy, so you don't have to go elsewhere for your prescriptions. Should you require any other specialist care, Dr Yiu will refer you as required. UMP accepts a number of medical insurance schemes, both personal and employer, so it is possible to visit and have the costs paid directly by your insurer.

Sahaja Yoga Center

I'm just coming back from a free meditation session at Sahaja Yoga Center and I can't wait to write…read moreabout it...not because it was a good one though. I was very excited about it and was looking forward to getting a better insight into the meaning of meditation and to getting some practical advice but the experience was a bit of a 'fail'. To start with the location is not very convenient and the place itself lacks the comfort and peaceful vibe that I've found in most of the other yoga centers that I've been to before...a few of us arrived early and we were left waiting at the entrance. That wasn't nice, there was no air con and we were all sweating. Finally we got in and the session started, with a video explaining some concepts around Sahaja yoga. Both the English of the speaker and the quality of the sound were really bad and I had to focus my attention more and more to the point I finally got immersed in my own thoughts and forgot about the video...that was followed by an explanation of some poses and motions that can help you achieve a meditative status, conducted in Cantonese and translated a little poorly into English. I couldn't really follow as I had my attention in trying to decipher what was being said again! We kept practising and at some point I actually reached some level of concentration. The two hours that lasted went by quicker than I thought, I must admit, but I left completely drained and exhausted. I think there are many ways to make this better, by letting people know what's the preferred language, welcoming them and giving useful tips...after all most of us were beginners and we all left feeling the same way...
