It had two showings at night, and it was a beautiful lightshow accompanied by music along with the retelling of its history. Truly a magical experience. A live orchestra played as the lights danced and illuminated the architecture. I would love to come back and see the stain glassed windows in all its glory in the daytime. But overall, it is obvious in its grandeur and beauty it also holds a great historical significance to Brussels.

Eglise Notre Dame du Sablon was the only Church I visited during My Weekend in Bruxelles and not…read moresurprisingly it was not even in the Itinerary that my Yelp friend proposed. While walking by after lunch, I just could not resist admiring the exterior and started walking over as I saw all these stained windows from the outside. The inside was just breath taking especially on a nice sunny afternoon. Definitely worth coming in for a visit even if you are not into Churches or not Spiritual. Just a beautiful work of architecture, history and space that anyone could admire. And free for all!

It has not been very well maintained over the years to be honest. The structure inside again offers promise and holds onto the past in terms of aesthetics and design. A weird aspect I'd also discovered is it has an outside urinal spot that you essentially end up urinating on the building, which is quite disrespectful. A plus side though is the fact that it is located in the middle of one of the hipper neighborhoods in the city, so there is plenty to do outside of the church. There is no fee for this church and is usually open during most of the day and night, so that is a plus. Overall, not what I expected, but not a complete loss as there is a lot to see nearby.

I ended up here by accident. Right in front is a farmer's market and lots of restaurants around it. Which is probably why I couldn't find this place. It wasn't church-like. This historic central square is probably one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. What an amazing…read moreplace to feel what it must have been like centuries ago, eat lunch, or people watch. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's pedestrian only. We've hung out and strolled through in the early morning, afternoon, late evening, and even after dark well after midnight. Every two years in August, a floral carpet is installed in the middle of the centre. It's a ginormous arrangement of breathtaking flowers. A Christmas tree and lights go up every year. The neo-gothic architecture is outstanding from the kings's house to the town hall. Such an amazing piece of history that should be on everyone's sightseeing list.

The Grand Place is absolutely stunning and lives up to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site…read more The gold-trimmed architecture of the guildhalls and the Town Hall will leave you in awe. It's worth visiting twice--once during the day to see the intricate details, and again at night when everything is beautifully lit up. While it is usually packed with people, if you come very early in the morning, you can enjoy the square almost entirely to yourself. The surrounding area is full of shops and food, though it is very touristy, so keep that in mind. If you're lucky enough to visit during the holidays, the festive decorations are spectacular!

City hall was built in the early 1400's and is the only remaining medieval building of the Grand Place. The Grand-Place was damaged during the bombardment of Brussels in 1695. The 315 ft tall in Brabantine Gothic style tower was completed in 1455. Above the roof is pinnacled octagonal openwork. At the summit is a 16 ft tall gilt metal statue of Saint Michael, the patron saint of the City of Brussels, slaying a dragon.

I had the opportunity to attend this church in Brussels on a Sunday morning and it was definitely…read morean experience that I treasure from my European trip. Being from the United States, I sought out a church similar to my Episcopal home church, and this Church of England was the best option in Brussels. Service was in English. The church is relatively nondescript from the outside, but clearly labeled. I proceeded in for the 0900 service and it was almost empty. I would have thought that maybe there wasn't a service as advertised except for candles lit on the altar. The inside was very beautiful (see photo) and traditional, as was the worship. It was led by a pastor of African heritage, Augustine Nwaekwe, who gave a great sermon based upon personal experiences of fear from his upbringing in Africa appropriate to the liturgy of the day. Overall there were only about 11 people in attendance, 5 of which were one family. I followed in my Book of Common Prayer I brought with me, but things were out of order from what I was used to but I could follow. Communion was offered, a wonderful experience to share with those of the same faith, but otherwise a different culture. I talked to Rev. Nwaekwe and others after the service, but as I said, it was sparsely attended. They had later services at 1030, 1400 and 1900 (led by another paster) the might have been more attended (but would have interfered with my tourist day). I would rate higher if not for the sparse attendance, I figure that the later services had more energy.
