Beautiful Greek Orthodox Church in Cargèse. The Église Saint-Spiridon is an Eastern Orthodox Church dedicated to the Cypriot bishop known as the patron saint of sailors.
In the 17th century, 600 Greeks fleeing the oppression and religious persecution of the Ottoman empire disembarked on Corsica, the Isle of Beauty. Although this triggered tension between Corsican Mountain villagers, the Greek colony was able to return safely to Cargèse some forty years later.
The church was built in a semi-Gothic style with flying buttresses. It is home to the 13th to 16th century icons that the early Greek settlers brought with them. Frescoes dating to the end of the 20th century decorate the walls. read more
