This may be the last traditional women's hamam left in Izmir. Built in the 16th century, time has stood still for 500 years. We fumbled around and were endlessly amusing to our fellow bathers who taught us to pour water on ourselves, loaned us shampoo, fed us tangerines and grapes and delighted in our efforts. And we were scrubbed of ALL dead skin by a friendly woman named Velma, clad in black bra and panties which seems to be the universal massage outfit from Korea to Turkey. After the scrubbing we were given a soap massage. And then set on the floor to have our hair shampooed. No one spoke English so Velma talked to us in German. Vunderbar, yes? And yes it was marvelous. Cost 25 Turkish Lira (around $8) and we left a tip. 1 1/2 hour best treatment ever. Sketchy neighborhood and a bit of a challenge to find so go during the day and do not be in a rush. It is absolutely worth it. read more
