We arrived a few days early for our July 2019 Collette 9 day tour of Alpine lakes and Scenic…read moreTrains, spending the time self touring Zurich, Switzerland. Much of the time at various museums, but found time to walk to Lake Zurich. Big vast blue mountain lake on the edge of one of the most expensive cities in Europe. Snow covered peaks of the Alps in the background. Fancy promenade for walking around the parks full of gardens that line the Lake. Water fountain in one area, spewing a geyser of water high in the sky. Bridges and wooden towers line the river full of ducks quaking for a handout. On the opposite side is a lake shore walkway. They have a high dive tower in the summer, where dare devils jump off the 30 foot tower into the deep cold waters of the Lake below. A local band is playing. When they see that I'm recording a few seconds of music, one of the performers stops me afterward, asking if I would like to buy a CD of their music. Trying to get hustled again. Not many Asians in Zurich, and no way for me to hide that I was a tourist. As our tour leader, Marion Roy said, this was the first time she had seen a senior Chinese tourist in shorts and sandals. But she had never been to California in the summer nor Hawaii.

Loved it here. Spent a Sunday afternoon just reading my book on one of the benches. Water is really…read moreclean, which makes the whole setting really nice. Beautiful view of everything.

This hill is located in the the oldest part of Zurich (near Schipfe). It was once a Celtic…read moresettlement and then it became a Roman fort. The stone wall of the fort is what you see today. There's more history there that is still being uncovered. Some items found around the Lindenhof date back to the 1st century BC. Today, it's a large park with incredible views of Zurich and the Limmat River. We saw groups of people playing boules in the grassy area on a Sunday, as well as people playing chess. There's a fountain in the middle of the square that pays homage to Hedwig's women who wore battle gear to defend the city during the seige of Zurich in 1292. It's worth seeking out as it can be quite peaceful up there even though it's a tourist hot spot. The walk up the somewhat steep pathway and steps to get there from the city center is worth it. I've read that there is an elevator for those with mobility issues, but I didn't see one. There are benches as well as places to sit along the wall. It's shady and breezy up there. A great place to relax and enjoy the view.

We stayed at a hotel on the other side of the river and walked across a lovely bridge to get here. You start at the bottom of the hill where there is a one lane road. While there are cars (or were, when we visited), mostly there are pedestrians and bicyclists. The lane is full of little shops and restaurants all vying for your attention and money. Eventually you come to a wide and tall (long) staircase going up. At the top is what is considered Lindenhof Hill, a quaint park with gorgeous views across the river and towards Lake Zurich. There is a fountain and old pumping station, as well as some Roman artifacts. It's a nice park to just sit and take in the views, or play a game of giant chess/checkers. The streets are all narrow in this area, but once you leave the hill, you need to find Thermengasse. It is a covered pedestrian walkway with grating for a walkway. Underneath the grating is an exposed archeological dig of a Roman heating system. There is signage throughout the passageway telling you all about it. As night began to fall, we made our way around the area, just taking everything all in. We ended up by the Fraumuenster church and walked across the Muenster bridge towards the Niederdorf area. If we had had more time, we would have explored the area more, but we were happy with the highlights we did see. It was a nice little introduction to the city. 78/2025

Today was such a lovely day that originally I had gathered a bunch of coworkers to go get the Yelp…read moresoup at Simply Soup, but it was just too warm for hot soup today... so we opted to enjoy lunch outdoors by the lake instead. :) After munching on a chicken breast sandwich at Hafen Enge Beiz, we strolled through the Rentenwiese park to enjoy the grass, sunshine, flowers... and most importantly--head over to the ice cream stand. ;) There I spied... a new Magnum Marc De Champagne ice cream bar!! I LOVE ICE CREAM. I LOVE MAGNUM. I LOVE TRYING NEW THINGS. This was everything that I love. The lady at the stand was really nice and spoke English to me, handing me a lovely silver-wrapped Magnum to celebrate "25 years of pleasure" for CHF 3.50. Oo la la! 7% Marc de Champagne sauce + 24% milk chocolate coating + 5% outer silver coating + 0.5% alcohol = 100% deliciousness!! I really liked the crunch when I bit into the bar and tasting the creamy goodness inside. I usually don't like tasting alcohol in my sweets, but the champagne taste is quite light--almost like eating a champagne truffle--but even less so. Just enough to get a hint of champagne and all the yummy goodness of a rich Magnum ice cream. The perfect way to end lunch while enjoying the view of the beautiful snow-capped Swiss Alps across the clear blue Zurich lake. Ah...

I don't get the hype of Fischer Fritz. It is super popular and not easy to get a reservation (but…read morethey reserve some of the tables for walk-ins but those are the tables at the back). As it is next to the Zurich Lake it is obviously a nice location, the view is really nice but in my opinion there are other places with the same view and a better menu. While it is called Fisher Fritz (German for Fisherman Fritz), they don't have a wide variety of fish dishes on the menu: they have fried fish and one baked trout. I had the trout and it was just average. However the side salat I did not like: it was swimming in dressing... so much so that I didn't eat it. My friends had the fried fish and said the truffle fries were more tasty than the fish. In addition, the service is not good at all, we had to wait forever, and several mistakes were made, no apologies given. It is a bit out of your way as it isn't in Zurich centre and I don't find it worth to go there as there is many better places at the lake.
