I wanted to write a memorable review for my very momentous 700th review. I think this one would…read morequalify for this very occasion. In Germany, particularly in Bavaria, stricter COVID-19 Prevention Health Measures Ordinance went in effect in early November 2020. The immediate affect was the closing down of all non-essential businesses including restaurants, retail stores, etc. I still remember how disappointed I was by this since it happened just as I arrived in Germany. Today we actually had a sit-down meal for the first time! Yay, things are finally getting closer to the new normal in Bavaria! There were several restaurants and cafés set up with outdoor seating on this visit. It wasn't a particularly warm day, and there was a little breeze to make it feel chilly. We chose Gasthaus zur Sonne because it was a little set back from the busy street. Just as our drink order was served, they turned overhead heaters and made it more comfortable for us. Service was very pleasant...maître de/cashier lady was very cheerful (perhaps almost over the top), and took our food and drink order right away as we were seated. Young female server was somewhat quiet perhaps keeping balance with gregarious older lady, yet very pleasant and courteous. Our food was very good. It wasn't anything fancy...just bratwurst and salads (beneath the pile of lettuce, there were assortment of typical Franconian pickled vegetables which we really like). Sauerkraut was very good, too. It was altogether a very enjoyable meal. They have both German and English menus.

The menu is standard biergarten food and drink. They had two alcohol free beers by the bottle in addition to regular. I got a Tucher Reifbräu alcohol free. It was okay - easy to drink but too light for my taste (I've had richer alcohol free beers so I know that's not it). Fun to try though. The dish I got was "Fried camembert with salads, cranberry, and bread". I think this would have been appropriate to share between two people if it were paired with an appetizer - the cheese was actually not as heavy as I expected, but it came with 6 slices of bread which was way too much for me. I was able to finish most of the cheese, half of the bread, and all of everything else. It was a really well-executed dish though! There were three different types of bread, all of which were great, the breading on the cheese was nice, and even the salad dressing was really good and went well with the cranberry. I think the prices on the menu are appropriate (lots of stuff in the €10-15 range) considering it's good quality food with hearty portions.

This review is not about the service. Sitting inside gave me a direct Birds Eye view into the kitchen... unfortunately. After ordering I had to watch the person in the kitchen, while preparing foods, eating and licking his fingers. It completely ruined my meal!! The taste wasn't bad at all but i was already too thrown off having to watch this the entire time i was there. I'm super bummed, my 20$ meal was left on the plate.

The service is what you would expect in Europe, friendly but not fast as everything is cooked to order which gives you time to enjoy the atmosphere and some amazing cuisine! I recommend the Storchen nest - a mix of potatoes that form a nest with pork medallions in the center with a rich and creamy sauce - pure perfection! Highly Recommend!
