A cozy little inn with beergarden in Lützelbach, part of Modautal. You'll find all the typical…read morelocal specialities here, from cold meat platters or cheese specialities to warm dishes. And by the way, if you see something like "cheese and music" on the menu, it doesn't mean that the waitress will be singing while you eat - "Musik" refers to the vinegar, onion and caraway seed mixture that comes as a side dish. You can order beer of course, but the proper drink here is "Ebbelwoi", the local version of cider (and quite something else compared to English cider). Or, if you visit in autumn, try the not yet quite fermented variety, any stage from almost apple juice (brown) to sizzling (white) or almost clear. Service is very friendly indeed, the inn homely, and the food tasty. "Zum Spitzenwirt" also a guesthouse (a single bedroom is 35EUR for the night). The management speaks English, so communication should not be a problem. When I was last there, a group of young dutchmen were sitting in the corner telling me that they were perpetuating a family tradition: there parents used to visit this place in years gone by and now it was their turn for a stint "in the mountains". I guess for somebody coming from the Netherlands, it is actually quite high up here (at an altitude of just under 500m). Luckily, the beergarden is situated on the side of the house where one can't smell the pigsty of the neighbour opposite. If nothing else, it confirms the fact that the location is "in the country".
