Love coming back to this restaurant again and again for so many reasons…read more First of all, the food is always SO delicious and the portions are a really good size. I've never had long waiting times, and most importantly--when you come with family or friends, all plates arrive at the same time, without big gaps in between. And that's even though the place is always full. On top of that, I usually only go out to eat if the atmosphere is great, and this place absolutely nails it. Super aesthetic, rustic, modern farmhouse vibes. Can't recommend it enough.

The bread and olives are complimentary and delicious. I ordered a salad which was wonderful. My mussels came and the sauce, OMG!!!!, so so good. So good for sopping with the extra bread. I ate all of the mussels and I was by myself. Then, my main course came. My Salmon was cooked perfectly. I would go back and have the exact same thing. It was that good. It seems simple but restaurants do get it wrong from time to time. Also, the service was superb. Two young ladies seem to run both inside and outside. Prompt and attentive service. Highly recommend this place. I'll be in Saarbrücken again on Saturday and I'm trying to convince myself to try a new place, but I'm probably just going to go back to La Bastille.

Die Kartoffel is a corner restaurant in the old town part of Saarbrücken. We had lunch here with…read moresome friends, who encouraged us to try some of the traditional Saarland dishes. I was quite pleased with my dibbelabbes, a large pile of seasoned potato hash with a large side of applesauce. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/WSoi7t5DRTyPb9t7Yim9cQ My wife tried the hoorische, elongated potato dumplings with a bacon gravy, though she wasn't quite as excited as I was over my dibbelabbes. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/WSoi7t5DRTyPb9t7Yim9cQ?select=YO2OO7FEQc26NMaYiuZzZA Our friends got some chicken schnitzel & fries for the kids, and split a salad and some other dish for themselves. Staff was helpful (though I can't recall what the English proficiency was here for the non-German speaker). Yay for a good local traditional food experience!

I ordered the special of the day, Mix Grill, with grilled meats. The dish was simple, perhaps even conventional, but the quality of the ingredients and the preparation was indeed very good. The place is cozy and the decoration of good taste. Coupled with reasonable prices, Die Kartoffel is a pleasant choice. PS: just the owner spoke some English, so it really feels like Germany.
