I even saw some men playing cards around the table as we left. Our neighbor told us that they specialize in Frankonian country cuisine like schäufele (slow roasted pork shoulder) and sauerbraten (marinated roasted beef). I think he ordered our plates of schäufele ahead for us to make sure they didn't run out of our food just in case. The serving was generously healthy, and it tasted very good. It also came with a side salad--with pickled vegetables like cucumber, cabbage, carrots and radishes which is also very typical of Frankonian country salad. These country dishes are very hearty and pack great flavors. It meant to feed a hungry farmers after their day of hard work. Also, it symbolizes a communal tradition of coming together for special occasions of celebration with neighbors and friends since farmers primarily ate at home, and it was left for some special occasion to eat out at the local inn. Our neighbor told us that a good village has two inns since not everyone can get along with everyone all the time. I thought that was an interesting observation and honest thought. It was altogether very lovely evening, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
