Zoo

My first time here and I thought it was a nice outdoor venue. A lot of different food and drink vendors. All expensive of course! We actually waited in a long line to get our drinks but then we went to get something to eat inside. I think it was the cafe? It had chairs and tables and plenty of places to sit. It was definitely a plus for me as it was hot that day so it was nice to be inside for a little while before we headed out in the heat. I noticed the people who attended the concert were very chill. They didn't even stand when the band came out. I wasn't used to that at all. You also get to explore the zoo before the show. I think we got there around 5pm and walked around until 6:30.

I love outdoor music venues and prior to my Portland trip I heard good things about the Oregon Zoo Summer Concert Series. The series runs every year from June-September and features a variety of musicians. 2012 showcased artists like the B52's, Grace Potter, Buddy Guy, Rosanne Cash, Chicago, Ziggy Marley and Melissa Etheridge. Located inside the zoo parking is a pain. A lot of people take the public transportation known as the MAX to avoid such. But once inside it is very cool to be walking through the zoo grounds on your way to the back end of the zoo where there sits a grassy knoll and outdoor amphitheater. You are allowed to bring in a picnic to enjoy on the lawn (no alcohol allowed inside and liquids must be sealed) and blankets and short style lawn chairs. No pets. The Oregon Zoo sells alcohol like beer and wine. You can buy wine by the bottle for prices between $25-$30. The proceeds go to support the zoo so you are paying money for a good cause when you buy alcohol at this event. Any tips you may try to leave all go to the zoo. I saw Robert Randolph and the Family Band play. The place was PACKED. The area is small enough for it to feel intimate but big enough to fill quickly. Get there early to get a good position. It was such an enjoyable experience. I only wish I could have gone with other people and brought a picnic. This is really the joy of this place. When the sun sets over the trees you will feel in a peaceful state of bliss.

Waiting for the show to start.

I recently attended a concert with vip tickets. Our vip tickets included dinner and drinks. Dinner consisted of a garden salad, a spinach salad with peaches, vegetarian baked beens, roasted red potatoes, bbq chicken legs, and pork ribs. Water and iced tea were available, but my friend and I opted for the Columbia-Crest chardonnay. We had great seats for the concert, and enjoyed the show and the atmosphere very much.

My view of what is that? I think it is the stage.

Need more staff and vendors for food and beverages. One hour in line is ridiculous for a medium sized venue. Love the setting!

Ask the Community - Zoo Nights

Are there any red pandas available in Oregon zoo?

Can you bring blankets to sit on in general admission?

Yes! You can bring blankets or tarps that are no larger than 6x6 feet. Check out this link for more information on what you can and can't bring in. https://www.oregonzoo.org/visit/summer-concerts

Do the reserved seats have chairs, or is it just a spot and have to bring your own chair?

The reserved spots have chairs. General admission does not. There is limited space to put chairs , we stood.

We also spied some good ol' Portland Food Carts, which we will sample next time we attend a Zoo Concert

Ideal dark bar vibe! Perfect place for a cocktail late night…read more Drinks were great. Our table order a variety of drinks and none of them were really sweet. The ambience is low lighting, lounge, playing Amy Winehouse. Also they have absinthe if you're in to that! Our server was really kind and was able to give great recommendations. The space itself is pretty small.

Driftwood Room is an interesting one. If you've been watching Mad Men like I have recently, you'll…read morefeel right at home -- minus the misogyny and the occasional cringe reminder that this era wasn't actually that long ago. The room drops you straight into a version of 1950s America that's been preserved just enough to feel nostalgic without feeling like a museum. Low lighting, wood everywhere, cocktails that feel like they belong in a glass with a heavy base and a quiet sense of purpose. It works, and it works for just about anyone. The drinks are excellent, and the service is generally solid. That said, this is a hotel bar, and it's often staffed by a single bartender, so your experience can vary depending on who's behind the stick that night. I've had great visits here -- the kind where everything flows -- and I've had nights that were just okay. Nothing bad, just inconsistent in a way that comes with the territory. And that's really the crux of it. At the end of the day, this is a hotel bar. Which means drinks come with a premium -- not outrageous, but noticeable. You're paying a bit extra for the setting, for the history, for the fact that it's there when you need it. And while the cocktails are well-made, Portland has no shortage of places doing equally good, if not better, work for the same price or maybe a dollar more. Timing matters here. Weekdays are ideal -- when the room feels like it's yours, when you can actually settle into it. Weekends are a different story. Travelers roll in, rightfully ready to unwind, and suddenly you're competing for space, for attention, for a seat at the bar. So why go? Because when it hits, it really hits. It's a place to lean into the mood a little. Order something off their house cocktail list -- they clearly put thought into it -- and let yourself sink into that old-school rhythm where day drinking feels less like a vice and more like a quiet ritual. It's not perfect. It's not the best value in the city. But it is one of the more distinct experiences you can have -- and sometimes, that's enough.

I liked it so much that I came here again with friends a very short time after my first visit (and we saw a much larger jazz band). Jo Bar is physically attached to Papa Haydn, and is under the same ownership. Despite this, Jo Bar has its own food menu, but both share the same dessert menu. This means that you can get any of Papa Haydn's legendary desserts here. I made a reservation ahead of time, and was seated at the best table in the house for seeing the bands perform. The space is small, so some of the band will invariably be tucked in the area next to the entrance door, so be aware of this. It wasn't a huge detriment, but can be depending on where you're specifically seated. The only negative is that finding parking is a real chore. There is street parking, but most streets are very full in the evenings. I wound up parking in a parking garage several blocks away. I'm really looking forward to my next visit. Jo Bar is a GREAT place to enjoy great live music, GREAT food, GREAT service, and truly spectacular dessert.
